Time for Alleluia!

One of the traditions of our church is that we “bury the Alleluias” during the season of Lent, that is, we stop singing and saying Alleluia during that season. Then, when Easter breaks forth, we explode in Alleluias, praising God for the victory that Jesus Christ has won.

Alleluia is a Latinized form of the Hebrew Hallelujah, which is short for “Praise You, Yahweh.” The Jewish Hallel (meaning “praise”) is the recitation of Psalms 113-118, particularly at Passover, when the people celebrated their deliverance from bondage in Egypt. In the same manner – we cry Alleluia to celebrate our deliverance from sin and death through the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ our Savior.

I am a lover of old-time Gospel songs, and this season will have me singing one of my favorites, Christ Arose, by Robert Lowry. This is our Easter faith – Christ arose, and we cannot help but sing Hallelujah!

Death cannot keep its prey, Jesus my Savior;
he tore the bars away, Jesus my Lord!

Up from the grave he arose;
with a mighty triumph o'er his foes;
he arose a victor from the dark domain,
and he lives forever, with his saints to reign.
He arose! He arose! Hallelujah! Christ arose!
