This week, United Methodists join Christians around the globe as we live out the ancient traditions that gave birth to our faith.
We celebrate the incarnational power of Communion as we join Jesus in the Upper Room for a Last Supper and, in an act of holy remembrance, feast on the bread and drink deep from the cup of salvation’s promise.
In the Garden of Gethsemane, we feel the betrayal of Jesus’ closest friends and followers, and our voices rise with the crowds that shout, “Crucify him!”
On a hill at Golgatha, we stand with Mary as witnesses to the torture of the cross and the humble faithfulness of a God-turned-flesh, bleeding and dying. The sky turns black, and the fabric of the world is torn.
And even amid the tears, we accompany the women to the tomb, only to find it empty. Christ is not there. He is risen. He is risen, indeed! It is a time for Hallelujahs! We are redeemed -- reborn in the story as we claim our roles as heirs of a living God. As another Easter dawns, we offer our thanks and praise for a risen Savior, who is Christ, the Lord.
This Holy Week, we connect with all the people of the Baltimore-Washington Conference as we gather in churches across the region to live out this ancient, yet daily story. May our faith and discipleship deepen as we experience Christ anew in the Gospel drama of a cross, a tomb, and a God who is always present in each of our lives with gentleness, ferocity, and unconditional love.
May Easter joy be yours!
