The Short Vort

The Small Things in Life

Too often I fail to acknowledge the seemingly small chassadim that are done for me daily.

Take the shul as an example.

I often arrive at Shul early; however, I usually go to my office to learn and write and prepare and don’t enter the Shul until davening starts.

This morning I arrived at about 4:45 A.M. and went into the Shul to see if I left a Sefer there.

I did not see anyone at first, however, I heard a noise which sounded like books being moved.

I looked around the shul and to my (pleasant) surprise, there was a man who was arranging the siddurim and chumashim in a neat and orderly manner.

It was obvious to me that he was placing all the siddurim on shelves which were easily accessible, avoiding the very bottom shelf which is difficult to reach.

It is also a greater kavod for the seforim that they don’t sit on the bottom “ground-level” shelf.

Here is a person who arises way before dawn and comes to learn , yet, nevertheless, takes the time to first perform a Chesed for the tzibbur.

No one would ever know about his Chesed. He is not looking for honor or even recognition.

He performs a Chesed which helps all, yet, most will never know who their secret benefactor is!
