HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE FEBRUARY 2023 HSC MEETING

Minutes from past meetings and dates of upcoming meetings can be found on the HSC website.

The next Community/HSC Meeting is Monday, March 27th in the Leigh library @7pm. All are welcome!

Email us any time with questions or suggestions: president@leighhsc.org.

Highlights from Principal Kara Butler

  • Leigh’s Competitive Cheer team won nationals for the 2nd year in a row!
  • CAASPP testing is happening at Leigh in March.
  • California is requiring an Ethnic Studies unit for graduation starting with the class of 2030. Schools must offer Ethnic Studies starting in the 2025-26 school year. There are two paths for this unit - embedding it into an English course or embedding it into a Social Science course. Leigh is leaning towards the Social Science path for this requirement.
  • Four Leigh students were selected for the New Museum Los Gatos high school art exhibition “Unarmed Truth 2023.”
  • People are using the Leigh parking lot for overnight EV charging, preventing teachers and students from parking in the morning. Leigh will give each violator 3 warnings and then will tow the car.

Highlights from ASB (Associated Student Body)

  • The Spring Fling on March 24th will be a carnival with many activities, not just dancing. There will be a rally the week of March 20th.
  • ASB is working on applications for next year.
  • The prom is May 13th.
  • View full list of ASB/student activities.

Highlights from CUHSD Board of Trustees, Leigh Board Liaison, Linda Goytia

  • The CUHSD Board is working on priorities for the next budget cycle. There will be announcements inviting parents to join the planning process.
  • The next Board meeting is on Thursday, April 6th. Closed Session begins at 5pm and Open Session begins at 6pm. The agenda will be published on Friday, March 31st and will be available on BoardDocs (the tool used to manage Board meetings and agendas). All Board meetings are held in the Board Room at the Campbell Union High School District Office, 3235 Union Avenue, San Jose, CA 95124. Meetings can also be viewed on livestream. Watch recordings of past meetings. Learn more about the Board of Trustees.

Highlights from College & Career Specialist, Nathalie Goricanec

  • Career day was a great success with 420 students attending and over 90 adults coming to speak. The layout was changed to improve the flow and make it easier for students to talk with many different areas. The students received the layout for the different career areas and suggested questions prior to the event, and the feedback from adults was that students were well prepared. Thank you to all those in our community who came to this event to share their careers with our students!
  • Mrs. Goricanec is assisting counselors with the course selection communication process. The students choose their courses prior to meeting with the counselors this year, making the time with counselors more effective.

RECENT PROGRAMS/ACTIVITIES FUNDED BY YOUR DONATIONS

With thanks to the generosity of our community, our Home & School Club income this year exceeded our goal through very generous annual giving drive donations, higher than expected corporate matching, and large anonymous donations. This allows us to fund many more programs and items than planned. With input from Mrs. Butler, Ms. Adams, Leigh staff, our HSC Board and Committees, and our community members, and after much discussion and thoughtful consideration, the following programs/items were approved for funding at the March HSC meeting.

$10,000

Refurbished electric golf cart for Admin Team to improve school safety

$10,000

Community Liaison efforts (learn more about our Community Liaison at Leigh)

HSC BOARD & COMMITTEES: YOUR HELP NEEDED FOR SCHOOL YEAR 2023-24

The Leigh Home & School Club supports Leigh’s academic and social/emotional needs of all students at Leigh. In order to accomplish our goals, we need many people with varied skills to help. We are currently looking for the following board members for the next school year 2023-24:

  • Vice President
  • Recording Secretary
  • Parliamentarian
  • Auditor

We are also looking for Committee Chairs and volunteers for:

  • Campus Beautification
  • Communications team
  • Volunteer Coordination

Feel free to check out our website for more information and the HSC board and committee positions. Volunteering with the Leigh HSC is a fun way to meet other Leigh parents while making a difference for our students and staff at Leigh.

If you would like to hear more details about any of these areas, contact Susan Smith, president@leighhsc.org.

BOOSTERS AT LEIGH

The Home & School Club supports the academic and social-emotional well being of all students at Leigh. There are three additional booster clubs at Leigh that support extra-curricular activities. All four boosters operate independently of each other.

PAPA is the Performing Arts Parents Association supporting all theater and music programs at Leigh (PAPA website):

  • The BBQ benefit (formerly a Crab Feed) was successful this year in spite of the rainy weather. The Leigh kitchen is being remodeled, so the Crab Feed is not an option until there is a working kitchen. The remodel project is projected to take 18 months, so there will be at least one more BBQ before a Crab Feed can be attempted.
  • The theater spring musical is Little Shop of Horrors.
  • The Blossom Hill Festival was March 15th, where feeder schools performed in a concert with Leigh band members.
  • The PAPA Board is looking for new Board members for next year.

Spirit Boosters at Leigh includes all parents, coaches and community members dedicated to supporting our cheer program at Leigh High School (Spirit Boosters website):

  • Congratulations to the Leigh Competition Cheer team for winning nationals for the 2nd year in a row!

Sports Boosters at Leigh includes parents, coaches, and community members dedicated to supporting the athletic program at Leigh High School (Sports Boosters website):

  • The Sports Boosters Board is recruiting new members for board positions for next year. They have raised $63,000 for student-athletes. The current fundraiser is stadium chairs.
  • Follow Sports Boosters on social media to see pictures of athletes and results from games. Facebook; Instagram.
