Highlights from Principal Kara Butler
|
- The student National Arts Honors Society is working to promote Hepatitis Awareness. They will be painting a cherry blossom design on a utility box in the parking lot. They are also going to paint a mural near the front office entrance, with a 60th anniversary theme (Leigh was founded in 1962).

The Leigh administration is in mid-cycle for WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) accreditation. Mrs. Butler will be sending out some information soon about focus groups for the upcoming WASC visit, and letting parents know how they can be part of a focus group. In 2019, the California State Assembly representatives passed S.B. 328 which requires high schools in the state to start no earlier than 8:30am. This bill will come into effect in the school year 2022-23. Leigh staff are preparing a survey to ask students and parents about their preferences related to this change.
- Leigh has hired 3 additional Instructional Assistants.

Highlights from College & Career Specialist, Nathalie Goricanec
|
- Currently, the primary focus is on helping seniors with their college applications. Three days a week, seniors can get support with their college applications in the library during tutorial.
- During second semester, Ms. Goricanec will focus on meeting with freshmen, sophomores and juniors.

RECENT PROGRAMS/ACTIVITIES FUNDED BY HOME AND SCHOOL CLUB
The following staff grants were approved for funding at our November HSC Meeting:
- $403 for a color printer for the the Leigh SAI-Autism Program
HSC’s annual Tax Return has been filed, for the fiscal year ending 6/30/21.

GRAD NIGHT TICKETS FOR OUR SENIORS ARE ON SALE NOW
Grad Night at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk on June 2nd promises to be an unforgettable night as our seniors spend one last time together as a class. Chartered luxury buses will collect students from Leigh at 9:00 pm and return by 3:00 am the next morning. See flyer below to learn about all the amazing activities students will experience on the night!

SAVE THE DATE FOR THE LEIGH STAMPEDE!
The Leigh Stampede is on Saturday, May 21st, 2022. Join us for our 6th Annual Longhorn Stampede Run/Walk – a 5K event through our Cambrian neighborhood.
Volunteers Needed
Planning is already underway. If you would like to join our team, please contact the Stampede committee at stampedeinfo@leighhsc.org. We would love your support! Let us know what you like to do and we will find a place for you to help. We particularly need support with community outreach, sourcing sponsorship, and creating graphics.

Come see the fall production "Almost, Maine" by John Cariani. "Almost, Maine" is a touching set of vignettes about love and relationships happening over the course of one night in a distant northern area of Maine. Booster fundraisers: Cheerleaders are selling See's Candies for the holidays as a fundraiser through Dec 3rd. Purchase on the Spirit Boosters website. Sports Boosters is planning several fundraisers over the next few weeks and these will be announced on the Sports Boosters website. The Marching Band performed their show "Synthesia" as a benefit fundraiser for an organization called Hungry for Music which helps provide musical education for kids who wouldn’t otherwise receive it. Donations can still be made to this organization on the PAPA website.

If you missed the wonderful interview with, Kavita Mahtani, you can view the recording now. Ms. Mahtani was recently named one of the most powerful women to watch for 2021 by American Banker. She is the CFO of one of the largest international banks, HSBC. Find out how she became so successful and learn about the struggles she faced along the way. This event was hosted by the Women's Club as part of their EmpowHERment Webinar Series.
