Home Starts Here: Recognizing Fair Housing Month

April is Fair Housing Month—a time to reflect on the importance of ensuring everyone has access to safe, stable, and affordable housing. At Habitat for Humanity of Forsyth County, it’s a reminder of why we do this work every day.

Fair housing means opportunity. It means removing barriers and creating pathways for families to achieve strength, stability, and self-reliance through homeownership.

At Habitat Forsyth, home starts here—through building homes, preparing families, and supporting them long after they receive their keys. Future homeowners invest 300 hours of sweat equity and complete financial and home maintenance classes, building a strong foundation for long-term success.

But the impact doesn’t start on the build site—it starts in our community. It starts at Habitat ReStore.

Every donation, purchase, and round up at the register helps fund affordable housing right here in Forsyth County—turning everyday actions into life-changing impact. And with the upcoming Peters Creek ReStore Liquidation Center, we’re expanding access to affordable home goods while growing that impact even further.

Because fair housing isn’t just about policy—it’s about people.

It’s about homeowners like Jasmine (story below), who recently completed the Habitat Homeownership Program and purchased her home. Her journey reflects the perseverance and hope that define so many Habitat families—and what’s possible when a community comes together. This month, you can be part of that impact.

Shop. Donate. Round up. Give.

Together, we build more than houses—we build opportunity.

Taking the Leap: How Jasmine Found Home

Jasmine is excited about her new Habitat home and all that comes with it: Many hours of watching her 7-year-old daughter play in a new big yard. The pride and joy of owning a home of their own. And a soon-to-be new member of the family – a dog – now that they are leaving apartment living behind.

It’s a far cry from the uncertainty she felt when she filled out her application for the Habitat homeownership program in early 2025. “I was really tired of living in an apartment and waiting on maintenance to fix things. My sister urged me to apply to Habitat but I was hesitant, thinking I might not qualify. I took a leap of faith and did it. If you really want something, you’ve got to go for it.”

Jasmine, a pharmacy technician, says her Habitat journey has been a good experience. “The financial classes have helped me a lot in learning how to budget and save. It really helped me raise my credit. We had a cooking class, which I really enjoyed. We volunteered in the ReStore and in the community, and I loved that most of all."

“I am overjoyed and overwhelmed and feeling so many emotions right now. This is such a blessing, and the Lord has placed this house in my hands for a reason. I am very grateful and thankful for this opportunity. I would tell anyone considering Habitat to take that leap of faith and apply, because you never know what can happen.”
