HOMEAID HIGHLIGHTS Spring 2019
A MESSAGE FROM CEO
PETER SIMONS
As we come out of a long winter, HomeAid is warming up to start celebrating our 30 th Anniversary! The actual date is in June, but we will be using the upcoming Pacific Coast Builders Conference (PCBC) in San Francisco the last week of May to get the wheels turning. Our booth at PCBC will feature our partners, projects, and accomplishments from our first 30 years. This will be continued on our website for the final 30 weeks of the year after PCBC with a new story each week. We will also be reaching out to new parts of the county as we attempt to create projects or hold outreach activities in 30 markets this year.

HomeAid America Celebrates 30 Years of Impact
For the past thirty years HomeAid has been an integral part of the fight to end homelessness in America. At our core, we believe that every individual has worth and human dignity and deserves the basic provision of shelter as a necessity of life. This is illustrated through our development of 550 shelter projects housing 333,000 people.

Our 30 th anniversary is not just a celebration of past accomplishments, but a look towards the future. Homeless service agencies continue to seek our services and our pipeline includes over 51 housing-related projects valued at $33 million that need our urgent attention.

We invite you to join us in providing hope and homes to those in need as a Building the Way Home Supporter. Your donation ensures growth of our programs, providing additional homes and support for families, veterans, youth at-risk, and countless others.

Please consider making a $30 donation in honor of our 30th Anniversary
HomeAid Launches HomeAid WORKS
New Workforce Development Program Made Possible Thanks to the Lennar Foundation
HomeAid is launching HomeAid WORKS, a workforce development program that will allow people experiencing homelessness the chance to pursue careers in the homebuilding industry. HomeAid WORKS is made possible by a $500,000 grant from the Lennar Foundation, the charitable arm of Lennar Corporation, provided as seed funding to create the new program.

HomeAid WORKS (Workforce Opportunities for Rebuilding through Knowledge and Skills) will provide technical construction training, education and job opportunities in the homebuilding industry for men, women, youth and veterans who are experiencing homelessness, at risk of homelessness or coming out of homelessness. The new program will be an extension of services provided through the organization’s main housing development and community outreach programs.
CHAPTER HIGHLIGHT
HomeAid Portland Completes Catholic Charities' Kenton Women's Village Pod Challenge
Home Builders Foundation-HomeAid Portland joined Catholic Charities of Oregon, SRG Partnership, City of Portland’s Joint Office of Homeless Services, LMC Construction, and PSU’s Center for Public Interest Design to construct sleeping pods for the newly relocated Kenton Women’s Village. Kenton Women’s Village is a creative, collaborative project, offering a new potential approach for addressing houselessness at a small scale, which could be adapted and implemented in communities across the country.

To complete the village, it was decided to enlist the building industry in a friendly competition to tackle the issue of homelessness head on. Twenty-one teams joined the Pod Challenge to build one of three prototypes of sleeping pods over eight weeks. Nine of the twenty-one builders were HBA-sponsored teams.
BUILDING NEW LIVES
DEBRA'S STORY
HomeAid Los Angeles completed a 62-bed recuperative care facility last fall to give homeless patients discharged from Pico-Union hospitals a place to heal, rather than returning to the streets. Without a place to recover, many return to emergency rooms within 30 days.

When dialysis client Debora came to Pico-Union Recuperative Care, she was very sick. But shelter, a better diet and good old-fashioned TLC have worked wonders. Since her stay, every single lab has improved! Debora's dietitian and nurse manager at her dialysis clinic were quick to notice the difference. “She looks fantastic; she is happy and well groomed!"

PARTNER HIGHLIGHT
HomeAid Visits Family Promise in Raleigh, NC to Deliver Bedding and Housewares
In late March, our Marketing & Communications Director Amanda Genakos traveled to Raleigh, North Carolina to visit the local chapter affiliate of our national partner, Family Promise. Family Promise of Wake County serves families experiencing homelessness with housing, basic necessities and support services such as life-skills training and case management at their drop-in Day Center.

With more than 5,000 people experiencing homelessness in Wake County, Family Promise is one of only two emergency shelter programs in the area that allows families to stay together, regardless of the ages and genders of children and parents, sparing parents the difficult choice between keeping their families together and finding a safe place for their children to sleep. They are the only nonprofit to offer a continuum of services and partnerships to move families from homelessness to safe, affordable, permanent housing.

During our visit, HomeAid donated bedding and housewares to the organization to benefit 40 families moving into their new homes, collected through the HomeAid Essentials program.
HOMEAID IN THE NEWS
HomeAid Austin Completes First Housing Development Project
HomeAid Austin and Builder Captain Taylor Morrison partnered to build an emergency drop-in center in Austin for survivors of exploitation and trafficking. Approximately 79,000 minors and youth are victims of sex trafficking in Texas.
The new center for SAFE, Stop Abuse for Everyone, will be an entry point where survivors can rest, get one-on-one counseling in a safe environment and meet with peers going through the same situation.

''This will be a positive space where survivors can seek out help, learn about the services SAFE offers and receive vital counseling," said April Whitaker, president of Taylor Morrison's Austin division. Taylor Morrison is honored to be a part of HomeAid's first project in Austin."
