Avoid The New Service Fee from HomeAway & VRBO!

HomeAway/VRBO has announced that they will begin charging a Traveler's Fee of 4-10% of your total booking. This fee is expected to roll out sometime in February 2016. The more expensive the total rental cost, the lower the percentage fee.

The best way to avoid that fee is to book your vacation rental directly with the owner or property manager.

Now that HomeAway, VRBO, and VacationRentals are all owned by Expedia, you can expect changes to be coming in how they offer properties and services to guests.

One of the first changes is the addition of the Service Fee for anyone choosing to book the property online. This is money that HomeAway will be using to further advertise and market their properties, but is that helpful for the guest that returns to the same area every year? Sadly no - it's just a higher price.

To avoid that fee, book directly with an owner that you've already done business with in the past, or a property manager with a well established company. You know that your transaction will be safe, and a good owner or property manager will also be able to connect you any additional services that HomeAway's booking service already provides.

If you've never heard of eCheck before, understanding it is simple. It's just like writing a paper check, but we do it without the paper.

eChecks have been around for decades. They are just as safe as paper checks because they follow all of the same protections and regulations, but they allow you to get instant credit for your payment - no waiting for paper checks to be mailed and cashed, and no cost for the check, the envelope, or the postage.

In the Vacation Rental business, paying by eCheck instead of paper check means that you don't have to wait a week to get a confirmation on your reservation! No one else can book it out from under you. :)

eChecks are also less expensive for Vacation Rental owners to process, so this helps the owners to keep their expenses AND THEIR RATES down. Now that HomeAway and VRBO are adding their traveler fees to the vacation requests, anything to help keep those rates down should be great news!

There are only about 30 parking spaces in the basement, so you have less waiting time for carts and elevators, and no need to walk across the street to your car.
