The age of the homecoming “king” and “queen” is over. Instead of crowning a homecoming “king” and “queen” this fall, the University will choose three Stony Brook Royals, who can identify as any gender.
The audience is the jury in “The Defamation Experience,” a nationally acclaimed, live production that combines a riveting courtroom drama with audience deliberation and discussion exploring issues of race, class, religion, gender and the law.
Nancy Hiemstra is a political geographer whose research focuses on the consequences of immigration enforcement policies. In particular, she conducts research on the effects of U.S. detention and deportation policies in Latin America (specifically Ecuador), and critically considers the relationship between ideas of homeland security and daily experiences of insecurity. She recently initiated a project called the "internal material economies of detention," focusing on the interior realities of detention facilities, including those located in New York.
