Have Fun and Be Safe this Homecoming

Tips to celebrate safely:

  • Plan ahead! Stay safe by eating a good meal before drinking. Choosing a number of drinks and only having those drinks available will help you set your own limit and stay within it.

  • Stay with a trusted group of friends and keep an eye out for one another.

  • Don't forget to drink water! Stick to 1-2 standard drinks an hour and alternate alcoholic drinks with water.

Extended Campus Observation Room (COR) October Hours

The COR is a confidential, non-judgmental and voluntary space for students who have had too much to drink.

Sat Oct 18 at 2pm –7am on Sun Oct 19

Fri Oct 24 at 9pm – 7am on Sat Oct 25

Sat Oct 25 at 2pm – 7am on Sun Oct 26

'No Guest' Periods in Residence

Please note that guests are not permitted in Residence during the following periods:

  • October 16–20
  • October 24–27
  • October 31–November 3

Who Counts as a Guest?

A guest is any non-resident of your Residence building. When hosting in your assigned Residence room, a guest is any non-resident of that room. Anyone visiting you (whether signed in under your name or not) is considered to be your guest even if they live in a different Queen’s Residence building.

You can review section 3.10 in your Residence Contract for more information.

The University District Safety Initiative (UDSI) will be in effect

The City of Kingston will enact the University District Safety Initiative (UDSI) from Friday, October 17 at 9 pm to Sunday, November 2 at 6 am.

Celebrate responsibly to avoid court fines (up to $2,000!) under the city's Nuisance Party Bylaw, alcohol-related offences, and/or non-academic sanctions under the Queen's Student Code of Conduct.

Residence Conduct Corner: Celebrating Homecoming

If you are celebrating Homecoming, please remember some of the key requirements of the Residence Contract that are intended to keep everyone safe:

  • If you are of age, you can only drink alcohol in your room.
  • Drinking games of any kind, including with water, are not permitted as they promote excessive and rapid consumption of alcohol.
  • Alcohol in glass bottles (including beer bottles) is not allowed in or around Residence because of the safety risks if they get broken.
  • Possessing and displaying items that promote unsafe alcohol or cannabis consumption (such as funnels, trophy walls and wizard staffs) are also prohibited because they promote an unsafe consumption culture.
  • Cannabis cannot be smoked in residence or on Queen's property.

More information about the alcohol and cannabis expectations in the Residence Contract can be found in clause 4.10.3 and 4.10.4

ResSoc News

Grants and Bursaries

The Residence Society (ResSoc) is the student government that represents all students living in Queen’s Residences. Established in 2013, ResSoc works in partnership with Residence Life & Services to enhance the residence experience through programming, advocacy, and leadership opportunities.

ResSoc is led by a team of six student executives and 19 House Presidents who live in residence communities across campus. Together, we plan events, provide peer support, and ensure that the student voice is heard in decisions that shape residence life.

We’re excited to share that applications will soon open for internship positions with ResSoc's executive team. This is a part-time student role designed to provide hands-on experience in leadership, communications, and project management. These interns will work closely with ResSoc’s executive team to support initiatives that make residence life more inclusive, engaging, and student-driven.

More information on the position, including how to apply, will be shared with students through ResSoc’s channels and residence communications in the coming weeks. Encourage your student to get involved—whether by attending residence events, joining their House Council, or applying for a ResSoc position. Each opportunity helps them connect with their peers, build leadership experience, and make their residence community feel like home.
