I want to speak directly to our Homeland members regarding the recent announcement of store closures, consolidations, and the marketing of certain locations for sale. These developments understandably create concern and uncertainty at the store level. You deserve clear communication, strong representation, and stability where it matters most.
In moments like this, it’s important to focus on what remains firmly in place: your Union contract. Your negotiated Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) is still fully in effect. It is not a suggestion—it is an enforceable agreement that protects your rights, your working conditions, and your access to hours and opportunities.
Worth highlighting is Article 11, which addresses seniority. This language ensures that seniority—your length of service with the company—matters. Qualified employees have the right to claim additional hours in accordance with their seniority and the contract. That is a concrete protection you can rely on, even in the midst of operational changes.
Your day-to-day experience matters, and to that end, we strongly encourage you to participate in this survey. Your input allows us to advocate more effectively on your behalf.
For our Kroger members, I also want to provide an important update. We have now selected a bargaining committee and alternates. Thank you to everyone who submitted their interest—this level of engagement reflects the strength of our membership.
We have already held our first introductory bargaining committee meeting, and I am confident that the members selected are well-prepared and committed to representing the interests of the entire bargaining unit.
Across both employers, our commitment remains the same: consistent, transparent communication. You will continue to hear from us through your Union Representatives, your Shop Stewards, as well as through text and email updates. Stay connected, stay informed, and stay engaged.
In uncertain times, solidarity is not just a principle—it is a strategy. Your Union is working, your contract is in force, and your voice continues to drive our efforts forward.
In solidarity,
Ricky Burris
UFCW Local 1000 President
