All great things have a beginning, and for the Homeless Remembrance Blanket Project, it was the idea to display and share a massive blanket in Carlisle, PA. On June 9th, 2021, Pat LaMarche spoke at graduation to some wonderful people who are victims of poverty. They had taken a course on money management. Laughable when you have no money, but these courageous women did it. One young lady shared that she just loved working with yarn and wished she had a reason to do it more. Walking home, the idea for an art project for her that would highlight the poverty she knows all too well came to be. A Homeless Memorial Blanket Project to bring volunteers together to make hand-made blankets for those experiencing homelessness and to display them at Memorial Park on National Homeless Persons' Memorial Day, December 21, 2021, was born. Although the event was later moved to the First Lutheran Church in Carlisle, it produced more than 200 blankets for persons experiencing homelessness, covering over 3200 square feet of the church lawn. Fast forward to the anniversary of this idea, and we are now well on our way to a goal of producing more than 5000 blankets, 100 for each of the 50 US states. 500 will be transported to the Capitol Lawn in Washington, DC during National Homeless Persons' Memorial Day for a display covering more than 9,000 square feet. The young lady who inspired it all will even be with us in Washington, DC to be part of our now new #memorialblanket - taking it to a huge level in just ONE YEAR! She is truly inspirational.
