Homes, Communities, Hope + School
|
|
Did you know: According to a study from the University of Tennessee, children of homeowners are 25% more likely to finish high school and 116% more likely to graduate from college, compared with children of parents who don’t own their home.
As children go back to school this August, think about what the stability of a home does for their self-confidence, their focus, and their success-- and how you can help more children grow up to achieve their dreams.

At Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity, the children of our future homeowners are already dreaming big. When asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” here’s what some of them had to say:
“I want to be a politician and run for President.” -Walter, 13
“I want to own a company and buy my mom a Lamborghini.” -Noah, 7
“A police officer.” -Marcellus, 6
“I want to be a travel nurse and help people in countries with conflict.” -Aisha, 15

Doug has served on the Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity board of directors for a total of 6 years. He joined Habitat's leadership after attending a tour of local Habitat homes. "The tour was an eye opener," says Doug. "I knew it was an organization I wanted to get involved with."
Alongside his work on the board of directors, he has also volunteered in ReStore, and will continue to serve on the finance committee.
Doug says his favorite part of working with Habitat is seeing the success of partner families. "The dedications I have attended are great memories. Each one is special, seeing the families receiving keys to their opportunity to own a home."
Thank you Doug, for all your support!

Volunteer Spotlight: Nikki
|
|
|
Nikki has served on the Family Selection Committee since 2019. These volunteers review applications for homeownership based on their need, ability to pay, and willingness to partner.
"I like seeing the whole process: From the initial application, to the final move-in day with all the steps and hard work in between," says Nikki. "It really is truly amazing what hard work goes into helping a family with a "hand up"... into their dream of living in a house of their own."

Alliant Energy to support Habitat homeowners
|
|
Alliant Energy has announced a plan to build a community solar garden in Cedar Rapids, which will allow the company's electric customers to benefit from solar power without installing solar panels on their own property. As part of this initiative, Alliant has pledged to donate up to $400,000 in solar blocks from the garden to Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity homeowners. These solar blocks will provide monthly credits on Habitat homeowners' energy bills over the course of their Habitat mortgages. Thank you, Alliant Energy, for this wonderful gift to our families!
