BOOK SALE
HSP Used Curriculum Sale-Wednesday, May 18  10:00-2:00
desk_tidy_colored_pencils.jpg

Do you have some books or curriculum hanging around your home that you no longer need?  Are you looking for some curriculum for next year?  Whether you are a home school veteran or rather new to the home school scene, you probably have some materials that you have finished using or that just didn't work out for you that you would like clear off your book shelves.  Wouldn't it also be nice if you could pick up some of your books for next school year at a "used book" price?  Here is a way to accomplish both goals----Homeschool Plus will be hosting a Used Curriculum sale on May 18 from 10:00am-2:00pm.

Come shop during those times and see what other home schoolers have used and even get a chance to ask them questions about their materials.  You can also enjoy some delicious treats from our bake sale while you shop.  If your kids are with you, a little cookie may occupy them long enough to give you a chance to really look around and chat.  If you'd like to sell some items, you can reserve a spot by e-mailing the coordinator Wendy Bokmiller ( wendy@bigfatcows.net ) or call the HSP office at 466-3477. All we are asking is for a small donation ($5 minimum) to help offset our costs.  Team up with a friend and you can switch off shopping and selling duties.  If you have materials you'd simply like purge but don't want to sell them yourself, we will be happy to accept your contributions as a donation to HSP and sell them that day.  While you are here, you can get a peek of our day at Homeschool Plus and what goes on with our programs.  This opportunity is open to the home school community at large.   Old friends and new, come join us on May 18th.  We look forward to seeing you!

Rx for Reading Session 1 Ages 6-11      9am-11:00
                          Session 2 Ages 12-18    2:30-4:30

Rx for Discovery Reading is a reading program designed for children
ages 6-18 who struggle to read.

The National Reading Panel established the essential foundational skills necessary for reading and this is the focus of this program.

This multi-sensory approach to developing reading is a fun and effective approach to building and strengthening reading skills.

6 Weeks, sessions are  9-11am  Fee: $175 + supplies, minimum 6 students in each session to hold program
Instructor: Amanda McBreen, NILD certified Educational Therapist
Supplies Required: Hand-held sized white board with fine point dry erase markers and eraser. Index cards on a ring or spiral bound, NILD Blue book and Blue Book supplies (will be acquired through instructor at cost)

Rx for Math
Rx 4 Math is specifically intended for students in grades K-5 who would benefit from early intervention or whose basic math skills are below expected standards as determined by a local educational agency.
RX 4 Discovery Math will build and strengthen number sense, math fluency, math vocabulary, and problem solving strategies within the weekly small group sessions. Students who need to master basic number sense skills as well as those who rely on procedural understanding without a conceptual understanding would benefit the most from this program.

Students will be challenged to apply their growing understanding of number sense to novel problem solving activities that challenge thinking and reasoning. Hands-on, research-based, number sense activities will be utilized as the core content in this dynamic intervention while mediation, Socratic questioning, and the strengthening of cognitive functions will serve as the core methodology. In this dynamic intervention, students' foundational math concepts will be strengthened while their thinking and problem solving skills will be challenged, all within an atmosphere where math anxiety is reduced and thinking is maximized.
Supplies: NILD math book (acquired by instructor at cost), deck of playing cards, set of 6 dice (preferably colored), small hand-held  sized white board with fine point dry erase markers and eraser. Index cards on a ring or spiral bound.
6 weeks  Session runs 12-2:00  Fee: $150 + supplies minimum 6 students needed to hold program

3 Dimensional Bas Relief Plaster/Clay Sculptural Frescoes:  This all-time student favorite features traditional 3D Plaster Bas Relief Sculptures where students will learn how to effectively use the Art Elements positive & negative Space, Form, Color, Texture and Art Principle Emphasis as they prepare a plaster surface, carve using clay/sculpture tools on plaster & clay, then turn reliefs into "FRESCOES" by painting.  Students will be encouraged to design a creative sculptural form expressing their unique ideas and interests.
