Hometown newspapers stand up to Big Tech
|
|
By Christopher P. Reen | Clarity Media Group
The internet that Silicon Valley promised us was supposed to be a haven for new ideas, robust free speech and a free flow of information. Instead, the internet we got is dominated by a handful of Big Tech companies that wield unprecedented power over nearly every aspect of our lives.
While Google and Facebook are amassing billions of dollars in advertising revenue, small, local and independent media companies, which produce content that fuels these platforms, have to fight for scraps. Big Tech does everything it can to ensure that its users never leave their platform for other sites — depriving small and local publishers of their chance to monetize their content.

Klobuchar, Kennedy, Cicilline, Buck, Durbin, Nadler release updated bipartisan journalism bill
|
Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-Minnesota), Senator John Kennedy (R-Louisiana), Representative David Cicilline (D-Rhode Island), Representative Ken Buck (R-Colorado), and Senate and House Judiciary Committee Chairs Dick Durbin (D-Illinois) and Jerrold Nadler (D-New York) released a revised and expanded version of the bipartisan Journalism Competition and Preservation Act to address dominant online platforms’ power over news organizations.
The bill removes legal obstacles to news organizations’ ability to negotiate collectively and secure fair terms from gatekeeper platforms that regularly access news content without paying for its value. The legislation also allows news publishers to demand arbitration if they reach an impasse in those negotiations.
The revised bill can be found HERE.

CherryRoad brings water to a news desert; Palo Pinto Press will debut with inaugural edition on Friday
|
So much in Texas starts with the new football season, and in Mineral Wells and Palo Pinto County this year that fact takes on added significance with the opening of a new newspaper in a county without.
Mineral Wells and Palo Pinto County lost its newspaper in May of 2020, a casualty of the disrupted local media industry compounded by the challenges of doing business during pandemic times. But CherryRoad Media has bucked that trend, growing from no newspapers to 64 newspapers across 10 states in less than two years.
The Palo Pinto Press will debut with its inaugural edition on Friday, Aug. 26. Led by editor Ann Powers, a veteran community journalist, the paper will include a weekly print edition and online presence.
