ABOUT THE PROGRAM
The evening begins with semi-staged excerpts from Angel Lam’s theatrical piece, Lost Shanghai. Taking inspiration from her grandfather, Lam’s evocative work is a musical love story about ambition, espionage, betrayal, and redemption set in the tumultuous revolutionary days leading to the fall of Shanghai and a mass exodus to Hong Kong. The all-Asian cast of lauded Broadway singer/actors includes Gen Parton-Shin, Kai An Chee, Mandarin Wu and Karl Josef Co. Lost Shanghai is directed by Richard Caliban with projection design by Andrew Freeburg.
The second half of the program begins with two exciting world premieres: George T.K. Lam's Postcard which takes its inspiration from the soundscape of modern Hong Kong and Chad Cannon, the composer of the Oscar-winning documentary American Factory. Cannon's new work, 145 Waterloo Road, highlights Hong Kong as a major port for Chinese immigration to California throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Also included on the program is award-winning Hong Kong composer Fung Lam’s I. Circles, II. Reminiscence, with video by Anthony Lai, with Angel Lam's Fragrant Harbour and Shigeru Umebayashi’s Yumeji's Theme from the film In the Mood for Love, arranged for harmonica and ensemble, featuring the world champion harmonica player Gordon Lee. Additional instrumentalists for the evening, include Yang Yi, gu zheng player; Graeme Steele Johnson, clarinetist; Patrick Yim, violinist; Ben Larsen, cellist; Hyungjin Choi, pianist; and Alex Wyatt, percussionist.
