Tentative Agreement
Dear Fellow Flight Attendants,
On Friday, March 14, we announced that we reached a Tentative Agreement (TA) with Hawaiian Airlines’ management on a contract extension. The extension runs through February 28, 2028, and provides a 12% pay increase over the next three years. The contract extension provides other important improvements, including a one-year extension of our Retiree Health Reimbursement Arrangement (RHRA), which is set to expire at the beginning of April.
The gains made in the TA are significant since Joint Collective Bargaining Agreement (JCBA) negotiations have just started and are expected to take at least two years to complete. If our contract not been amendable during this “window of opportunity,” we probably wouldn't have seen any contractual improvements prior to reaching a TA on the JCBA. AFA International President Sara Nelson, the staff of the AFA Collective Bargaining Department, our Section 6 Negotiating Committee (Joni Kashiwai, Jeff Fuke, Scott Henton, Kahea Ching) and Senior Staff Negotiator Paula Mastrangelo all deserve a ton of credit for bringing this agreement together prior to the start of JCBA negotiations.
Voting for the TA will run from March 31 through April 17. The Section 6 Negotiating Committee held the first of three virtual Town Hall meetings on March 17. A recording of the meeting and a separate FAQ are available online. The Section 6 Negotiating Committee will be available to answer your questions at virtual Town Hall meetings on March 25 and March 27. You can register and submit questions now for the March 25 meeting, which will begin at 1400 HST. Members of the Section 6 Negotiating Committee will be in the crew lounge during the weeks of March 31 and April 7 to answer your questions.
The Section 6 Negotiating Committee and your Hawaiian AFA leadership, including myself and Kela, recommend that you vote “FOR” the agreement.
In Solidarity,
Martin Gusman & Kela Chong
Team Update
The first three weeks of March were incredibly busy with the transition to the merged Alaska-Hawaiian MEC, the announcement of our TA and the start of JCBA negotiations all happening within a short period of time.
The first full week of March was spent in SEA, where the new Alaska-Hawaiian MEC met and participated in negotiations training with AFA Senior Staff Negotiator, Paula Mastrangelo. Jeff Fuke and I spent the remainder of the week working with the Joint Negotiating Committee (JNC) on the opening proposal for negotiations.
The second week of March was spent in Honolulu, where the Alaska-Hawaiian MEC officers met with the AFA-Hawaiian’s MEC committee chairs and Hawaiian Airlines management. HNL LEC VP Kela Chong and I hosted a meeting for the new MEC officers and HNL Council 43 committee chairs. During the week there were several extended virtual meetings with the JNC, again working on the opening proposal for JCBA negotiations. The Tentative Agreement was announced on Friday. VP Kela Chong spent the entire weekend in the crew lounge answering crews’ questions about the TA.
Last week was again spent in SEA working with the JNC, beginning the opening round of JCBA negotiations. Information about the JNC and JCBA negotiations may be found here.
Joint Virtual Local Council Meeting
On Thursday, March 27, a joint virtual Local Council meeting will be held with United Airlines Honolulu Council 14 and Hawaiian Airlines Honolulu Council 43, from 1100-1200 HST. All members in good standing are welcomed to attend. Joint Local Council meetings are usually held prior to the AFA-CWA Board of Directors (BOD) meeting. Discussion will be limited to the BOD meeting’s agenda, which is the AFA-CWA’s annual budget. More information about the BOD and the agenda may be found here.
