Honor loved ones in community ofrenda

Moving Forward

The City of Sierra Vista and Sierra Vista Historical Society are honoring the deceased by creating a community ofrenda at the Fry Pioneer Cemetery.

The public is invited to bring copies of pictures of their loved ones to the Henry F. Hauser Museum to be laminated by Sept. 30 and then visit the cemetery with museum staff on Saturday, October 1 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to place their pictures. The ofrenda will be on display until November 3.

An ofrenda, which means "offering" in English, is a temporary altar created for Día de los Muertos to commemorate loved ones who have passed on.

Growing, growing, gone!

We've been fortunate to enjoy a productive monsoon in Sierra Vista this year but all that moisture has led to plenty of overgrowth.

Please remember to trim or spray grass and weeds before they reach 12 inches in height. That includes vegetation in any alleys adjacent to your property and by sidewalks surrounding your property.

Keeping overgrowth in check helps prevent pests and reduces fire danger when plants dry out.

City refuse customers can arrange for free green waste pickups on Wednesdays or drop off yard trimmings for free at the City's compost facility every day except Wednesday and Sunday (bring a copy of your current City sanitation bill). The City turns this green waste into high quality compost available for purchase.

Extraordinary Activities

Sample some of Arizona's best vintages at Vineyards in the Park on Saturday, Oct. 1, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park.

This festival is held together with Art in the Park, so you can find your favorite artisans and wines in one place! Save some money by getting your tickets online for $25 (includes wine glass and 12 tastings) or buy them at the gate for $30 (includes wine glass and 10 tastings). Additional samplings tickets, bottle sales, and glass sales will be available at the event.

Uncommon Recreation

Pick your distance from a 5-mile fun ride to a 62-mile adventure and enjoy a scenic bicycle tour of Sierra Vista and surrounding areas at the Sixth Annual Sky Island Tour on Saturday, Oct. 1, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The popular 20-mile ride has a new route, and everyone starts and ends at The Mall at Sierra Vista this year. The rest of this favorite annual event is still the same, with proceeds from this casual cycling tour benefiting the National Alliance on Mental Illness Southeastern Arizona. Registration closes Thursday, Sept. 29.

Although she has been in the role for a little while, #SVFireandMedical’s Michelle Knodle officially received her engineer shield and badge at a ceremony this week. Sierra Vista Fire & Medical Services is proud to celebrate her accomplishment in becoming the department’s first female engineer!
