Honoring 250 Years of Freedom, Enterprise & the Spirit of Independence

In 1776, bold words sparked a revolution. 250 years later, that same spirit drives innovation, enterprise, and the freedom to build. We're celebrating the legacy—and the future.

In just one year, our nation will mark a momentous milestone: the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. As we look ahead to 2026, the West Virginia Chamber of Commerce is proud to begin commemorating this historic occasion — and what it means for American business, innovation and the enduring spirit of enterprise.

The Declaration’s bold assertion that we are all endowed with the unalienable rights to “Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness” continues to inspire the entrepreneurial spirit that drives our nation today. For 250 years, that spirit has helped shape a nation where free enterprise and opportunity are cornerstones of our identity.

In the coming months, we’ll be sharing stories, insights and reflections — past, present and future — that celebrate the power of American business.

Stay tuned as we begin this journey to honor 250 years of independence - and build toward the next chapter of American leadership.

HISTORY THIS WEEK

250 Years Ago, The Ride Began.

So Did the Revolution.

On the night of April 18, 1775, a silversmith from Boston mounted his horse and rode into the darkness with a warning that would change the course of history.

Paul Revere was not a general, nor a politician—but a tradesman, a communicator, and above all, a citizen acting with courage. Tasked with alerting the countryside that British troops were advancing toward Lexington and Concord, Revere’s midnight ride became the spark that lit the first fire of American independence.

The very next morning, on April 19, a small band of Massachusetts militia stood their ground against the British army. Shots were fired on Lexington Green, and though vastly outnumbered, colonists at Concord pushed back—marking the first true battle of the American Revolution.

What followed was not just a war for freedom—it was a declaration that ordinary people could rise, act and shape their own future.
