HONORING ALEX AND ELIZABETH SMITH AT 36TH ANNUAL SPIRIT AWARDS

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith and his wife Elizabeth are dedicated to helping youth in foster care achieve their academic dreams. Together, they have been a life-changing partner for many young people in our YES (Youth Educational Success) program, which helps youth in foster care graduate high school, identify and obtain post-secondary education (college or vocational), and build skills to become successful, independent adults. We are so pleased to be honoring Alex and Elizabeth for all they have done at our Spirit Awards on April 22.

The Smiths are being honored because of their ongoing commitment of spending time with youth in our YES program mentoring, hosting graduation and holiday events, and providing encouragement. R ecognizing that youth aging out of foster care need a flexible, resilient and personalized path to post-secondary education, the Smiths provide i nspiration to young people who have often felt forgotten.

"When I was 18 heading off to college, I had the support of family, coaches and a scholarship," Alex explained. "I can't imagine how we can expect foster teens to be successful when we say to them, 'You are now 18 and we are cutting you off - so go out and make it on your own.'"

Alex and Elizabeth are also public advocates, bringing awareness through collaborations with Minsky's Pizza and raising more than $20,000 to support our efforts.

Currently, only 3-4 percent of youth nationwide who age out of foster care earn a 4-year degree. Thanks to Alex and Elizabeth Smith, more youth in our care have the opportunity to pursue their dream jobs by achieving their academic goals.

TEACHING ABOUT TRAUMA
Social Learning - Question Others. Question Yourself.

A key factor to being trauma-informed is social learning. This means a community learns from all its participants - where information, skills and viewpoints are shared and celebrated from all economic backgrounds. By actively working together to see the big picture, we can begin to identify flaws and self-correct to help our community recover from whatever trauma it experiences. F or there to be an environment of creativity, innovation and learning within the community, there needs to be diverse opinions, idea and viewpoints - and the greater the diversity, the greater the number of ideas and possible actions we can take to make ourselves and our community stronger.
Through our efforts, more than 12,000 children and families receive critical prevention, treatment and support services every year. And you can help! We invite you to take part in any of the following events. Together we can have a positive impact on the health and safety of children and families!
