STARR Launches as We Celebrate 20 Years of Progress for Children of Incarcerated Parents

This month marks an exciting milestone for NCFamU as we officially launch STARR(Start Talking About Rebuilding Relationships) Live Programming, and the timing couldn’t be more meaningful. October also commemorates the 20th anniversary of the Children of Incarcerated Parents Bill of Rights, a landmark initiative that ensures every child with an incarcerated parent is treated with dignity, compassion, and care.

We couldn’t be happier that our program launch aligns so perfectly with this important anniversary. It feels like the best kind of coincidence and a powerful reminder that our mission is right on time.

Our team has worked tirelessly to prepare for this moment—building partnerships, coordinating with facilities, and training facilitators—to begin supporting incarcerated fathers and their children through restorative programming and connection.

We’re proud to be part of the next chapter in advocating for children and families impacted by incarceration, turning awareness into action.

If you’re interested in becoming a STARR Facilitator or learning more about our work, please reach out through the "Work With us Today" section at the bottom of this newsletter. Together, we’ll help families rebuild, reconnect, and rise.

Spotlights of the Month

World Mental Health Day

Today is World Mental Health Day, a global occasion to raise awareness about mental well-being and push forward efforts to make mental health care accessible for all. World Health Organization+1

At NCFamU, we believe mental health is a universal human right, and today is a reminder that none of us should face mental health challenges alone. This year’s theme invites conversations, community connection, and advocacy to reduce stigma and expand access.

As we mark this day, we commit to strengthening supports for children, youth, and families across North Carolina. From peer-driven programs to educational outreach, our work aims to uplift voices, build resilience, and ensure every family knows help is available.

National ADHD Awareness Month

This month we recognize National ADHD Awareness Month, a time for understanding, compassion, and education around Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Awareness Days+1

ADHD doesn’t just affect children, it impacts families, spouses, friends, and workplaces. Those living with ADHD often navigate challenges in attention, impulse control, and executive functioning, which can affect relationships, school, and work. Educating ourselves is key to offering supportive and empathetic environments.

By raising awareness, we can reduce stigma and build communities where individuals with ADHD are seen, heard, and supported.

Breast Cancer Awareness

Info Source: Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a time to encourage women to screen, detect early, and get connected to care.

In North Carolina, programs like the NC Breast & Cervical Cancer Control Program (BCCCP) offer free or low-cost breast and cervical cancer screenings for eligible women. bcccp.dph.ncdhhs.gov+2Community Commons+2

Additionally, Levine Cancer: Project PINK provides free screening mammograms and follow-up care for eligible women. Atrium Health Foundation

And in Mecklenburg County, the MeckCheck program offers free and reduced-cost breast screenings for uninsured or underinsured residents. Charlotte Observer

If you or someone you know qualifies for one of these services, please consider scheduling a screening. Early detection saves lives.
