Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is always deeply important in Contra Costa, where we work to foster a culture of equity, tolerance, and service.
Participating in a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. event is a powerful way to express our support for democratic values, equity, tolerance, love, service, and justice. I love joining my fellow community members in our neighborhoods, where we work together to achieve Dr. King's vision.
Dr. King taught us that:
“Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle.”
Here are some local events in which we can safely participate:
Monday, January 16
What: El Cerrito Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 34th Annual Celebration Rally & Car Parade (COVID safe)
When/Where:
- 9 a.m. gather at Del Norte BART Station (Key and Knox Streets)
- 10 a.m. Car Parade down San Pablo Ave. to EC Plaza BART Station (Decorate your vehicle!)
- 11 a.m. Program at EC Plaza BART Station

What: RICHMOND'S 16TH ANNUAL MLK DAY OF SERVICE by Urban Tilth
When/where:
- From 9am to 1pm at these locations:
- The North Richmond Farm 323 Brookside Drive Richmond, CA
- The Richmond Greenway, between 2nd st. and 22nd st.

Tuesday, January 17
What: Contra Costa Board of Supervisors' 45th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration and Humanitarian of the Year Awards
When/Where: In Person at County Administration Building, 1025 Escobar St., Martinez or via live-stream here or here, starting at 11:00am. The event will also broadcast live on Contra Costa Television (CCTV) channels, Comcast Cable 27, ATT/U-Verse 99, and WAVE 32.
Keynote Speaker – Honorable Tony Thurmond, California State Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Saturday, January 21
What: El Sobrante MLK Day of Service and Cleanup
When/Where: Meet at El Sobrante Public Library, 4191 Appian Way, at 10am to sign in, borrow cleanup and safety equipment and select a location for cleanup. Event lasts until 1pm. The Green Team meets every third Saturday of the month at the library from 10am to 1pm for their monthly cleanups.

Qué: El Sobrante MLK Día de Servicio y Limpieza
Cuándo/Dónde:
Reúnase en la Biblioteca Pública de El Sobrante, 4191 Appian Way, a las 10 a. m. para registrarse, pedir prestado equipo de seguridad y limpieza y seleccionar un lugar para la limpieza. El evento dura hasta la 1pm. El Equipo Verde se reúne cada tercer sábado del mes en la biblioteca de 10 am a 1 pm para sus limpiezas mensuales
