Everyday Excellence, One Habit at a Time with Jeff Koziatek: Habit #5 Know The Enemy

Remembering & Honoring Martin Luther King, Jr.

"The Purpose of Education"

By Martin Luther King, Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr.: A Legacy of Courage, Justice, and Hope

I wanted to look further into Mr. King Jr. and his legacy. He had so many amazing things to say as well. So, I captured some of those here. Enjoy and appreciate his legacy as it rightfully lives on! Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. remains one of the most revered figures in American history, a beacon of hope and a champion for justice whose legacy continues to inspire people worldwide. As the leader of the Civil Rights Movement, he dedicated his life to the fight for equality and human dignity, shaping a vision of a better, more just society. Martin Luther King Day, celebrated annually on the third Monday of January, serves as a reminder of his profound impact and the enduring relevance of his teachings.

Why Is Martin Luther King Jr. So Revered?

Dr. King’s influence stems not only from his achievements but also from the manner in which he achieved them. At a time when systemic racism and segregation were entrenched in American society, King championed nonviolence as the most powerful weapon against injustice. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, his approach emphasized love, forgiveness, and the moral high ground. This philosophy of peaceful resistance was instrumental in landmark victories, including the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the March on Washington, and the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

King’s ability to articulate a vision of equality and justice resonated deeply, transcending racial and generational boundaries. His iconic "I Have a Dream" speech, delivered during the 1963 March on Washington, remains one of the most powerful orations in history, painting a picture of a future where all people are judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

The Importance of Martin Luther King Day

Martin Luther King Day is more than a holiday; it is a call to action. It reminds us to reflect on the values King espoused: justice, equality, and service to others. This day encourages individuals to engage in acts of community service, fostering unity and making tangible contributions to societal betterment. It is an opportunity to assess how far we have come in realizing King’s dream and to recommit ourselves to addressing the challenges that remain.

Inspirations from His Life and Lessons

Dr. King’s life offers countless lessons for those striving to make a difference:

  1. Courage in the Face of Adversity: Despite threats, imprisonment, and eventual assassination, King remained steadfast in his mission.

Communicate to Connect Program Recap. - SPEAKER: RHONDA TRAVERS

Last week's Communicate to Connect in Today’s World program with Rhonda Travers was an absolute game-changer! A big thank you to Rhonda for her incredible insight and expertise and to everyone who joined us for this interactive session. And a shoutout and thank you to our emcee, Rich Unverferth!

Here are just a few of the incredible takeaways that left us inspired and ready to improve communication in every aspect of our lives:

1). Silence doesn't always mean disagreement. Give others time to process and respond.

2). Different perspectives matter—what you see might not be what others see.

3). Restate. Rephrase. Reassure. These three steps can transform your conversations. Make sure you understand what's being said, connect the dots, then ask for more information.

4). When meeting someone new, observe their verbal and non-verbal cues. Ask if they’re a “big picture” or “details” person to connect better.

5.) Effective communication starts with the energy you bring. Assess, evaluate, and adapt to the situation.

BJC Health System, Washington University in St. Louis, and Greater St. Louis, Inc. Provide Major Support to Brickline Greenway

Brickline Greenway is kicking off 2025 with three huge wins! Great Rivers Greenway (GRG), the public agency connecting the region with greenways who turns 25 this year, has received a major boost to support the project’s vision to connect 14 neighborhoods with 12+ miles of greenways. Significant investments from both BJC Health System (BJC) and Washington University in St. Louis (WashU) push the $245 million public-private partnership past the halfway-funded mark, as well as provide critical match for future federal funding applications. Greater St. Louis, Inc. (GSL) stepped up its commitment by forming a working group of CEOs to support capital campaign efforts, further ensuring success for the project in 2025.

“Brickline Greenway is a transformational project and we’re very pleased to invest in its success,” said WashU Chancellor Andrew D. Martin. “We value a vibrant, connected St. Louis where everyone has opportunities to thrive. Supporting the greenway is a meaningful way for WashU to help shape the region’s future and to advance our commitment to being ‘in St. Louis and for St. Louis.’ We look forward to enjoying the greenway with our friends and neighbors in our community.”

Both WashU and BJC contributed significant gifts to the Great Rivers Greenway Foundation to support the project. Most immediately, this funding helps to provide Great Rivers Greenway’s required local match when they apply in February for a federal transportation grant for the section of Brickline Greenway connecting the Cortex Innovation Community west to Forest Park. “BJC’s commitment to the health and wellbeing of our communities extends beyond our campuses, clinics and offices,” said Richard Liekweg, Chief Executive Officer of BJC. “We believe in helping create the infrastructure for healthier living, and the research on how to best encourage and support people to make active, healthy choices is very clear – it needs to be easy, safe, accessible and nearby. Brickline Greenway does just that by opening up a world of options to improve the overall health of our St. Louis community.”

Brickline Greenway has garnered just over $58 million in public funds from state and federal sources so far, $18 million of Great Rivers Greenway’s local tax dollars and more than $55 million in private funding. GRG and GSL are working in collaboration to raise the rest of the philanthropic investment by rallying the business community to support the community-centered project, which the STL 2030 Jobs Plan — a 10-year roadmap for boosting economic growth — calls “one of the most ambitious and inclusive placemaking efforts in the country.”

“A priority project in the STL 2030 Jobs Plan, Brickline Greenway is estimated to provide a 2:1 return on investment, contribute to the revitalization of Downtown St. Louis, and connect people across neighborhoods to jobs and opportunity,” said Dustin Allison, Interim CEO for GSL. “Partnering to bring the campaign across the finish line is a natural fit for our collaborative approach to equitable growth in St. Louis.”

“Brickline Greenway is a testament to the power of partnership and we’re so grateful to GSL, WashU, and BJC for their commitment and collaboration for this project’s bold vision and what it means for leveraging other funding to get this done for the community,” said Susan Trautman, Chief Executive Officer for GRG.

“We’ve completed two segments, we have Market Street under construction now, the City of St. Louis has bid out both of their connector projects (20th Street and Tower Grove Connector), and we’ll bid out North Grand in the next month..."

Habit #5: Know The Enemy

The known and unknown can stop us. While overcoming known challenges may be difficult, overcoming unknown challenges is a hopeful shot in the dark.

The unknown can be:

  • Distractions
  • Future worry
  • Present stress
  • Past failures
  • Doubt
  • Assumptions

We can't break free of what we don't know or refuse to acknowledge.

Naming the enemy gives us the opportunity to engage, respond, and grow.

Remember:

Known challenges are easier to overcome than unknown. Name your challenges and fears to start moving toward victory today.

Performance Tips:

  • Pretending a fear does not exist, does not equal bliss.
  • Blind positivity does not build traction or organizational trust.
  • After you define your challenge/fear, respond with truth, engage with curiosity, a support team, and a desire to grow.

Remembering & Honoring Martin Luther King, Jr.

Today, we honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., a leader who inspired the world to dream of justice, equality, and unity. Let his words remind us to stand up for what is right and to always choose love over hate. "I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." - Martin Luther King, Jr.

A Deep Dive into Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Life

Martin Luther King, Jr. (born January 15, 1929, Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.—died April 4, 1968, Memphis, Tennessee) was a Baptist minister and social activist who led the civil rights movement in the United States from the mid-1950s until his death by assassination in 1968. His leadership was fundamental to that movement’s success in ending the legal segregation of African Americans in the South and other parts of the United States.

King rose to national prominence as head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, which promoted nonviolent tactics, such as the massive March on Washington (1963), to achieve civil rights. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.

Early Years

King came from a comfortable middle-class family steeped in the tradition of the Southern Black ministry: both his father and maternal grandfather were Baptist preachers. His parents were college-educated, and King’s father had succeeded his father-in-law as pastor of the prestigious Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta.

The family lived on Auburn Avenue, otherwise known as “Sweet Auburn,” the bustling “Black Wall Street,” home to some of the country’s largest and most prosperous Black businesses and Black churches in the years before the civil rights movement. Young Martin received a solid education and grew up in a loving extended family.

The Montgomery Bus Boycott

While in Boston, King met Coretta Scott, a native Alabamian who was studying at the New England Conservatory of Music. They were married in 1953 and had four children. King had been pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, slightly more than a year when the city’s small group of civil rights advocates decided to contest racial segregation on that city’s public bus system following the incident on December 1, 1955, in which Rosa Parks, an African American woman, had refused to surrender her bus seat to a white passenger and as a consequence was arrested for violating the city’s segregation law.

Activists formed the Montgomery Improvement Association to boycott the transit system and chose King as their leader. He had the advantage of being a young, well-trained man who was too new in town to have made enemies; he was generally respected, and it was thought that his family connections and professional standing would enable him to find another pastorate should the boycott fail…

"The Purpose of Education"

By Martin Luther King, Jr.

Writing in the campus newspaper, the Maroon Tiger, King argues that education has both a utilitarian and a moral function.1 Citing the example of Georgia’s former governor Eugene Talmadge, he asserts that reasoning ability is not enough. He insists that character and moral development are necessary to give the critical intellect humane purposes. King, Sr., later recalled that his son told him, “Talmadge has a Phi Beta Kappa key, can you believe that? What did he use all that precious knowledge for? To accomplish what?”2

As I engage in the so-called “bull sessions” around and about the school, I too often find that most college men have a misconception of the purpose of education. Most of the “brethren” think that education should equip them with the proper instruments of exploitation so that they can forever trample over the masses. Still others think that education should furnish them with noble ends rather than means to an end.

It seems to me that education has a two-fold function to perform in the life of man and in society: the one is utility and the other is culture. Education must enable a man to become more efficient, to achieve with increasing facility the ligitimate goals of his life.

Education must also train one for quick, resolute and effective thinking. To think incisively and to think for one’s self is very difficult. We are prone to let our mental life become invaded by legions of half truths, prejudices, and propaganda. At this point, I often wonder whether or not education is fulfilling its purpose. A great majority of the so-called educated people do not think logically and scientifically. Even the press, the classroom, the platform, and the pulpit in many instances do not give us objective and unbiased truths. To save man from the morass of propaganda, in my opinion, is one of the chief aims of education. Education must enable one to sift and weigh evidence, to discern the true from the false, the real from the unreal, and the facts from the fiction.

The function of education, therefore, is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. But education which stops with efficiency may prove the greatest menace to society. The most dangerous criminal may be the man gifted with reason, but with no morals...
