Scout Shorts - October 2024 | |
In Honor and Memory...
This issue of Scout Shorts is dedicated to all those helping their neighbors after Hurricane Helene. Pictured are two brave heroes from the Saluda Circle Volunteer Fire Service who lost their lives early last Friday when a tree fell on their firetruck while they were responding to a call. They were Fire Chief Chad Satcher (on left) and 18-year-old Firefighter Landon Bodie.
Chief Satcher was an important part of our Scouting family. He was an Eagle Scout, past Camp Barstow staff member, and a Vigil Honor member of our Muscogee Lodge of the Order of the Arrow. Funeral services will take place at the Batesburg-Leesville High School Fine Arts Center this Saturday, October 5th at 11:00 AM for Eagle Scout Satcher and this Sunday, October 6th at 4:00 PM for Firefighter Bodie.
The family of Chief Satcher invites Scouts and Scouters to wear their Scout uniform and they will also receive friends and family tomorrow, Friday, October 4th from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at the Milton Shealy Funeral Home of Batesburg.

Camp Barstow Hosts Lineworkers and Cleanup Volunteers
More than 60 powerline workers from Mid-Carolina Electric Cooperative are being housed at Camp Barstow, starting today, as they work to restore services throughout our communities in the aftermath of Helene.
Under the leadership of Vice President of Properties from the Indian Waters Council executive board, Bill Eisele, massive cleanup efforts have also been underway at Camp Barstow, which has had numerous uprooted trees still dangerously upright and downed trees blocking roadways and paths. The camp has donated all the frozen food from its freezer to JC Outdoors, an area business providing hundreds of free meals per day along with showers and clothes-washing facilities to families still without power.
Regardless of skill level, volunteer help is still needed daily at Camp Barstow with things like moving downed trees and cleaning debris. For more information or to volunteer, please reach out to Scott Hagler at Scott.hagler@scouting.org or at this phone number.

Adaptive Scouting Committee
Helps Make Scouting Accessible
We need Volunteers from every District to Participate in this Committee Aimed at serving ALL Youth
Children constantly amaze us. We think each one has abilities that shine. Scouting has programs that support that goal. Scouting likes to focus on what all youth CAN do more than what limits them. Scouting feels that, given the opportunity and support, every youth can soar.
We have created a new Council Committee for Adaptive Scouting. Its purpose is to ensure that Scouts and Scouters are aware of how to include youth with any type of need and that they have access to all Scouting Programs and activities. The Committee will provide education, support, and resources to accommodate Adaptive Scouting needs. Also, the Committee will assist the Council and Units in ensuring that their facilities have the necessary tools to accommodate Adaptive Scouts. Learn more here.
