At the Pride Festival in Washington, DC, medical students from the HOYA Clinic and Hoya Medical Pride Alliance offered attendees free blood pressure and blood glucose screenings as well as HIV testing. The experience left a positive impression on the student volunteers. |

Using epigenetic measures to assess biological aging, investigators finds that older breast cancer survivors — particularly those exposed to chemotherapy — showed greater epigenetic aging than their same-aged peers without cancer, which may relate to worse outcomes. A study co-led by Vanessa B. Hurley, PhD, at the School of Health, finds that shared decision-making isn’t just good medicine, it also saves money. As shared decision-making goes up by 3%, health expenditures go down by about 10%. This impact doubles when Latinx patients are seen by Latinx doctors and triples when Black patients are seen by Black doctors. |

Researchers at Georgetown University’s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center led by Huadong Pei, PhD, who have been exploring the complexities of biochemical pathways involved in cancer development find that a form of glucose, a type of sugar, is intricately linked to a pathway used to build DNA molecules. When this pathway is overactive, it can lead to cancer and resistance to chemoradiotherapy.

Existing research administrative services on the Main Campus and Medical Center campuses are consolidating into the Joint Office of Research Administration (JORA). JORA will provide a comprehensive array of pre- and post-award support to faculty across the Hilltop conducting sponsored research. The office will be arranged by disciplinary clusters, each headed by a cluster research administrator overseeing proposal development services, grants and contracts administration services, and grant management services. Georgetown’s board of directors approved a balanced budget for the 2024 fiscal year, welcomed new board members, reviewed campus construction projects and passed the largest-ever increase to the university’s financial aid program during its summer meeting. |

Registration is open for the Second Annual Georgetown Center for Healthy Aging Symposium on July 12 in the Fisher Colloquium in the Hariri Building and online. The symposium, titled “Advancing Knowledge About Aging to Improve Health and Health Care,” will include oral papers, panels, posters and breakout sessions on new research collaborations, career development, community outreach and grant proposal development. The program is funded by the Georgetown-Howard Universities Center for Clinical and Translational Science (GHUCCTS).
