The 4th of July is the busiest day at Dana Point Marina. It's a day filled with get-togethers, water wars, cooking on boats, and a spectacular fireworks display. We also see boaters and neighbors who don't often visit their boats. The Dana Point Boaters Association invites everyone to the marina to enjoy a safe, fun-filled day and evening on the water.
As we celebrate, let's remember the significance of this day: the signing of the Declaration of Independence, which established our rights to liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The first grievance Jefferson listed in the Declaration was the king's failure to do what was "wholesome and necessary for the public good."
Dana Point Harbor and Marina was built by the County of Orange as a publicly owned "small boat harbor" on public tideland trust property. The law mandates that the harbor remains public property dedicated to the public good under a public trust. Private interests can never buy it; even when leased, it must remain public trust property. The County is responsible for enforcing the public's rights to enjoy this public property.
Boaters are the members of the public most affected by harbor decisions. The County's lease of the harbor seeks to fulfill that responsibility by requiring that prices charged to boaters, including slip holders, be "market rate… reasonably determined." The Dana Point Boaters Association (DPBA) continuously holds the mission to uphold this public trust. DPBA will continue to use all political and legal means to advocate for the rights and interests of all boaters, slip holders, and day-use boaters to enjoy the harbor.
But we need your support. Please consider donating to DPBA this holiday weekend so we can continue to advocate for boaters' rights.
Have a Happy and Safe Independence Day!
