Honoring Strength and Service This March

March brings the promise of renewal, and at Fisher House Kansas City, it’s a season that reminds us of the resilience and unwavering spirit of the military families we serve. As the days grow longer, so too does our gratitude for the community that surrounds us with strength and support.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the donors who make this mission possible, the volunteers who offer their time with compassion, and the VA staff and medical professionals who provide care with integrity and dedication.

Most of all, we honor the veterans and military families who find comfort within our walls. Your courage, sacrifice, and perseverance inspire every act of service we provide. It is our privilege to stand beside you during times of healing and transition.

This March, as we recognize milestones in military history and reflect on the meaning of service, may we all be reminded that strength comes not just from battles fought, but from the love and support we offer one another every day.

George Washington Birthday Celebration

We were honored and proud to represent the Kansas City Fisher House at the KC George Washington Birthday Celebration, hosted by the Kansas and Missouri State Societies of the Sons of the American Revolution and Daughters of the American Revolution. It was a meaningful evening recognizing the legacy of service, sacrifice, and patriotism that continue to define our nation —

values that closely align with Fisher House Kansas City's mission to support military families during times of medical need. We are grateful for the opportunity to stand alongside such dedicated organizations in celebration of our shared history and commitment to those who serve.

March 3

Navy Reserve Birthday

This recognition honors the establishment of the U.S. Navy Reserve in 1915. We recognize the dedication, readiness, and sacrifice of Navy Reservists who serve our nation both at sea and at home.

March 13

K9 Veterans Day

This day honors the service and sacrifice of military working dogs—loyal partners who know nothing other than serving alongside our troops. We remember their courage, dedication, and the unbreakable bond they share with their handlers.

March 17

St. Patrick's Day

While widely celebrated as a cultural holiday, St. Patrick’s Day also holds meaning for many service members of Irish heritage. We honor the legacy, pride, and contributions of Irish Americans in the U.S. Armed Forces throughout our history.

March 25

National Medal of Honor Day

This annual day of recognition celebrates the heroes who have received the Medal of Honor, our nation’s highest military decoration. We remember their extraordinary bravery, selflessness, and unwavering commitment to protecting others at all costs.

March 27

US Navy Reestablished

This day marks the reestablishment of the U.S. Navy in 1794 with the authorization to build six frigates. We honor the legacy, strength, and enduring presence of the Navy in safeguarding our nation’s freedom across the seas.

How Did the Medal of Honor Come to Be?

According to the Congressional Medal of Honor Society, on December 9, 1861, Iowa Senator James Grimes, Chairman of the Committee on Naval Affairs, submitted Bill S. 82 during the Second Session of the 37th Congress, “An Act to further promote the Efficiency of the Navy“. The bill included a provision for 200 “medals of honor” to be given to petty officers, seamen, landsmen, and marines who had distinguished themselves during the Civil War.

On December 21, the bill was passed and signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln. Secretary Welles directed the Philadelphia Mint to design the new military decoration. On May 15, 1862, the United States Department of the Navy ordered 175 medals ($1.85 each) from the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia with “Personal Valor” inscribed on the back of each one.
