On World AIDS Day, we honor the resilience of the women and communities who continue to lead the fight to end HIV. This year’s theme—Overcoming Disruption, Transforming the AIDS Response—reflects the work ELAWC has championed for five decades. Despite this administration’s decision to cancel its acknowledgment of World AIDS Day and significantly cut critical funding, we remain unwavering. We will continue to honor this day and to provide vital HIV prevention and supportive services.

From launching the first bilingual HIV/AIDS hotline, to using teatro for community education, to developing the HIV Promotoras en Acción curriculum and training Promotoras across Los Angeles County, ELAWC has long delivered culturally rooted, community-led prevention. Our pioneering work continues to be recognized for its national and regional impact on ending the HIV epidemic.

Today, through the ELAWC Health Collective—our integrated, survivor-centered health hub for HIV prevention, education, navigation, and healing—we remain a trusted anchor for women impacted by HIV in Los Angeles.

Our programs are shaped by survivors and affirm what research makes clear: trauma and gender-based violence heighten HIV risk, and ending the HIV epidemic requires more than medicine—it requires safety, healing, empowerment, and community.

Today, and every day, we reaffirm our commitment to an HIV response that builds on survivor and community wisdom—paving the way for a future where every individual has access to safety, dignity, and life-affirming care.
