February 2026

Dear Reader,

We've had a month filled with imaginative conversations and considered great questions with our clients:

  • "What would it look like to have the next generation of our family successfully integrated into the work of our family foundation?"
  • "What would I ask my grandparents about their hopes for our world if I could talk to them today?"
  • "What would my community look like if more charitable dollars flowed to our greatest needs?"
  • "What if we get it right with climate solutions by unlocking more innovative ideas and philanthropic dollars?"

It is our role as advisors to facilitate conversations that start with imagination and then funnel what we've heard into strategy and action for our clients. At GPA, we pride ourselves on asking great questions that lead to sound philanthropic strategy.

What We've Been Up To

We spent a wonderful evening in Charleston with Colony Family Offices presenting "Things We Wish We Knew: Planning Effective Family Philanthropy." We shared what generations down the line in a philanthropic family wished they'd asked their parents, grandparents and great grandparents about their charitable intent and wishes for the world. It was a joy to connect with advisors and philanthropists; hopefully we planted some good seeds for future conversations at the family giving table!

GPA is hosting a program of Lunch & Learns highlighting next gen engagement in family philanthropy, led by our Next Gen Advisor, Olivia R. Zale.

This month, our first session brought together advisors to philanthropists. These sessions are designed as curated, intentional spaces - creating room for honest dialogue and practical insight around engaging the rising gen with clarity and purpose.

Please share our upcoming sessions with your families and colleagues:

Client Spotlight | The Goizueta Foundation

The Atlanta History Center has launched a thoughtfully designed new exhibition with families in mind, The Goizueta Children's Experience. It is a vibrant and immersive space where children can explore history through hands-on play. Made possible with grant funding from The Goizueta Foundation, the exhibit reflects a commitment to education, accessibility, and learning - preserving the legacy of Roberto C. Goizueta. This addition is poised to become a favorite destination for Atlanta families for years to come!

What's Inspiring Us

The Heart of Philanthropy

What Else Can We Do? The Thirteen Intentions of Philanthropy - Stanford Social Innovation Review (40 minute read)

At a time when “impact,” “scale,” and “leverage” dominate philanthropic rhetoric, Ariel Simon argues we’ve confused one way of doing good with the only way. Drawing on wisdom from thinkers as varied as Maimonides and Immanuel Kant - and examples ranging from the Ford Foundation’s civil rights stand to Detroit’s “Grand Bargain” - the article lays out a powerful new framework: 13 distinct intentions that drive giving, each with its own moral logic and definition of success. If you care about the future of nonprofits, foundations, and everyday generosity - or if you’ve wrestled with how to make your giving matter - this is a fascinating read. It asks us to reconsider a simple question that just might reshape the sector: What else can we do?

Building Future Leaders in Public Service

The Talent Crisis Hurting Nonprofits — and America - The Chronicle of Philanthropy (5 minute read)

When young leaders begin their work in underserved communities, they meet needs while developing critical leadership skills. This article reflects on evidence from efforts like Teach For America and Teach For All, showing how early immersion in public service builds insight and empathy. Yet today, fewer graduates are choosing these paths. Financial pressures coming out of college and early corporate recruitment have made public service feel less accessible. This echoes insights from a conference we attended earlier last year focused on supporting the education sector and its leaders across every phase of their careers. It is work we take great joy in doing alongside our clients - helping them identify places to invest with impact.

Bold, Strategic Steps

How to Overcome Division and Act Boldly to Support Grantees Through Crisis - The National Center for Family Philanthropy (10 minute read)

The L.B. Research and Education Foundation took action to support grantees when they saw their nonprofit partners were at risk, despite having multiple funding sources, healthy reserves, and a carefully planned budget. By grounding their response in what they were hearing directly from the field, the Foundation's six-step approach illustrates how foundations can act decisively when they center grantee voices. What stands out to us in particular is their use of rapid response grants as an expression of trust. We have seen foundations deploy this tool effectively to move flexible resources quickly in moments of uncertainty, and when done thoughtfully, it can make an outsized difference.
