GPA Client Spotlight

The Guffey Family Foundation awarded $1M in scholarships to the College of Charleston Honors College program called Charleston Fellows. This program is the Honors College's top scholars program and supports students who aim to make a significant impact on their communities and in their chosen fields. “We are honored to be able to support the College of Charleston, an exemplary partner in our vibrant local community, and to provide more young leaders with the opportunity to benefit from the rigor and richness of its outstanding Honors program,” say Lawrence and Lucy Guffey.

The Magnolia Blossom Foundation partnered with Charleston Promise Neighborhood (CPN) and PCs for People to give refurbished laptops to families at three local CPN schools. The laptops are part of a larger initiative to address the digital divide through internet accessibility and digital literacy resources. The Magnolia Blossom Foundation provided funding to support this program in addition to a grant to Palmetto Goodwill to distribute refurbished laptops to adults seeking employment in the Tri-County region. In total, 260 laptops were given to those in need of digital access.

What We've Been Up To

Jess Williford, Vice President of Marketing and Senior Advisor at Grant Philanthropic Advisors, is the current board chair of Empower Charleston (formerly Social Venture Partners Charleston). In that capacity, Jess went on six site visits this spring to nonprofits located in the Charleston region. 


Site visits serve as an exceptional opportunity to get to know an organization–the people they serve; the staff and board’s passion; and the overall impact they make in the community. Empower Charleston awards two year grants every other year and also hosts a showcase event (October 17) featuring the six grant finalists:
