May 2024

Dear Reader,

We have been referring to this month as "Maycember" as it is chock-full. From end-of-school celebrations to nonprofit events to summer vacation planning and preparation, schedules are overflowing! As you and your family prepare for summer, we wish you time to relax and reflect on your intentions for 2024. The midpoint of the year is an excellent time to celebrate accomplishments and look forward to what's next. We hope you find the resources below helpful as you prepare for the remainder of the year!

Choosing the Right Charitable Giving Vehicle

Philanthropists and their advisors often wrestle with their options for charitable giving vehicles. You’ve mostly heard of a donor advised fund (DAF) and a private foundation, which are the two most common. Families can choose alternatives in the form of LLCs or Trusts. More sophisticated philanthropists may utilize a variety of giving vehicles to accomplish their philanthropic, tax planning and investment goals.

Creating a charitable giving vehicle signals that a family is ready to be more strategic with their philanthropy. It can provide a clear structure to drive intentionality with your giving. A charitable giving vehicle creates connection and unity among family members around commonly held values and honoring the family legacy. The provided framework of a charitable giving vehicle also allows for participatory decision making with family and community members.

Creating and adding to a charitable giving vehicle alleviates tax burdens. They create an income tax deduction in the current year for charitable gifts made in the future. Donors avoid capital gain taxes on appreciated securities donated to vehicles and there is no gift or estate tax on those donated assets.

Having a dedicated charitable giving vehicle(s) allows a family to house a “theory of change” for greater social impact. Focusing on a specific issue and/or geographic region realized through grants from a charitable giving vehicle can yield greater satisfaction.

Eight Ways to Volunteer as Family

It sounds good in theory: "We're going to volunteer as a family this summer with all of our free time!" When it comes to reality, when are you supposed to fit this into the schedule? Or we hear a lot, "I want my children to use their summer to get better connected to our community. But how do I find the right opportunity?" Well, we have some ideas.

The key is to ask for your children's help in choosing the right opportunity. Get them excited about what they're about to do and tap into their creative energy.

1. Volunteer at a local library and/or run a book drive.

2. Work with your local food bank to assist in sorting and organizing their supplies.

3. Offer tutoring or reading aloud to children at local day camps.

4. Play music or sing for residents of assisted living facilities.

5. Clean up your local parks and beaches.

6. Plant a tree in your yard or neighborhood.

7. Put together a lemonade stand and donate proceeds to a charity of choice.

8. Write uplifting notes of cheer to patients at a local children's hospital or a person serving in our military.

Don't let perfection be the enemy of good when it comes to finding volunteer opportunities; just get out there and do it! Building the muscle of generosity together will create lasting habits and good memories together.
