November 2024

Dear Reader,

Thanksgiving is around the corner! Generosity, curiosity and discernment stand out as themes in our work this month. Our team has been hard at work supporting families and corporations make year end philanthropic decisions as well as planning for 2025's goals. This month, we facilitated a panel on next generation leadership at Philanthropy Southeast's Annual Meeting; we've been on a number of compelling site visits including a visit to Turn90's new Charleston facility; and we're busy planning a next generation family retreat the first weekend in December.

Place-Based Funding: Why Philanthropists Choose this Strategy?

As a philanthropist, you have the exhilarating opportunity to maximize your impact with your charitable dollars, your time and your connections. Early on in the planning phase, you may consider: Should I focus on a specific issue or a specific place to drive my philanthropic efforts? Or maybe it is a combination of the two. We see philanthropists derive much satisfaction from building deep partnerships in a specific community to help local leaders solve big problems. According to a survey conducted by the National Center for Family Philanthropy (NCFP), 66% of family foundations that focus on a specific geography do so at a local level; this approach not only addresses systemic inequalities but also empowers local stakeholders to drive sustainable growth from within.

Client Spotlight

We proudly highlight SeamonWhiteside (SW+) for their inspiring achievements as of late. Based in the Carolinas, they hosted the 3rd Annual AEC Industry Cornhole Tournament in Charleston, raising nearly $15,000 for Camp Happy Days - a cause near and dear to our hearts. Additionally, SW+ was recognized as the #1 Medium Company in the Charlotte Business Journal's 2024 Best Places to Work. This honor is a testament to the SW+ culture grounded in connection and community.

What We've Been Up To

This month, we are celebrating five years of Grant Philanthropic Advisors. In 2019, I had a kernel of an idea to help philanthropists in their strategic decision making. Since our founding, we’ve served dozens of clients across the US and grown to a team of 8 to provide an objective, independent point of view on philanthropy advising.

Increase in Volunteerism + Civic Engagement

Volunteering and Civic Life in America Research Summary 2024 - AmeriCorps (13 minute read)

Volunteerism has rebounded in the US returning closer to pre-pandemic levels. AmeriCorps reports that nearly 30% of Americans volunteered between 2022 and 2023. About half of Americans informally help a neighbor, friend or coworker. This is an increase from their previous study as well. We find this increase in civic engagement, contrasted with the nation's decline in giving, to be compelling.
