On January 14th, a historic swearing-in ceremony at the State Capitol took place for Sheikh Rahman to honor the first immigrant Muslim elected to the Georgia State Senate. Soumaya Khalifa, ISB Executive Director, served as Emcee. About two hundred diverse attendees representing numerous religious communities were present.
"Today we celebrate a great American story. We celebrate the values and beliefs, that hard work, perseverance, serving others, love for God, country and community can bring us together to commemorate and celebrate this swearing-in. I want to congratulate Senator Rahman on his election," said Khalifa. Khalifa thanked the Senate leadership and the interfaith leaders for their support and cooperation in creating the program. The interfaith leaders each read a prayer for peace and understanding from their faith traditions.
Senator Rahman thanked everyone for their support and spoke of his immigrant journey and humble beginnings from a dish washer to entrepreneur to state senator. Senator Rahman pledged to work hard for all Georgians and to uphold the GA state and US constitutions. Please click
