On the Jewish calendar, tonight begins Lag BaOmer, the 33rd day in the counting of the Omer which takes place between Passover and Shavuot. According to Jewish religious tradition, after the death of Rabbi Akiva's 24,000 students from the plague, he was left with only five students, among them Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai. Bar Yochai went on to become the greatest teacher of Torah in his generation and is purported to have authored the Zohar, a landmark text of Jewish mysticism. Lag BaOmer, therefore, became a day of celebration of the great light (i.e. wisdom) that Bar Yochai brought into the world. It is also known as "Scholar's Day" and has become a joyous day of outdoor sports, archery, and bonfires.

Last week, our students celebrated Lag Ba'Omer a few days early with a Shabbat barbecue. This Friday we will continue our celebration of scholarship by honoring those Hillel students who will be graduating from San Jose State University or Santa Clara University in the coming weeks or who will be transferring from a community college. We look forward to coming together for Shabbat to reminisce about their time at Hillel and celebrate their accomplishments (graduating, achieving honors, getting awesome first jobs, etc.). Mazal Tov and Yasher Koach to all of our graduates and transfer students!
