Dear #Positivity Friends,

Happy May to all who celebrate! I know I sure do. With all the wishy-washy weather behind us, every day in May is a perfect excuse to take a long walk or a ride a bike or steal a turn on the playground swing. I may be 43 years old but this month just makes me want to play. It could have something to do with vivid childhood memories of counting the days until school let out for the summer. When the calendar hits May, a kid can smell freedom in the air!

May is also Mental Health Awareness Month, so now is a good time to check in with yourself. Whether you’re really struggling or just not feeling quite right, don’t wait to ask for help. There are resources in your community and online that can give you the support you need. And let your peeps know you’re looking out for them. You never know when a friend or family member may be having a difficult time and could use your encouragement.

Your mental health is as important as your physical health so take it seriously. If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health challenge, call 1-800-662-HELP or visit www.FindSupport.gov to find out about resources available to you. Life is beautiful—be healthy so you can enjoy it!

As always, I hope that you are enjoying my newsletter. If you missed an issue, you can find them all on my website. Pass this newsletter along and encourage your family and friends to sign up!

Proud Papa Pickles

The Houston Zoo will have a special Father’s Day celebration this year for Mr. Pickles, the zoo’s oldest resident. The 90-year-old Madagascar radiated tortoise became a father of three little hatchlings with Mrs. Pickles, his 53-year-old partner since 1996. This breed of tortoise has few offspring, so it was a chance in a million that an eagle-eyed zoo staffer spotted Mrs. Pickles laying the eggs and was able to rush them into an incubator to increase their chances of survival. Five months later, Mr. and Mrs. Pickles welcomed Dill, Gherkin, and Jalapeno to the family. Mr. Pickles could live to be 150, so there’s plenty of time for his kids to take him to a nice Astros game one Father’s Day soon.

Flying Lifeguards

A lifeguard sits atop that tall chair at the beach to have a better chance of spotting a swimmer who may be in trouble. But any lifeguard will tell you they can’t see everything from that chair and they can’t save every life. Adrián Plazas, CEO of General Drones, knows too well the heartache of not being able to save someone from drowning. When they were young lifeguards in Spain, he and his business partner Enrique Fernández were devastated when they couldn’t get to a drowning woman in time to save her. This led them to start a business together in 2015 to develop a search-and-rescue drone that, with the aid of an attached camera, helps locate a struggling swimmer and drops a personal flotation device that inflates when it hits the water. To Plazas, this is a game-changer because it gives the lifeguards more time to reach the victim. Since taking to the skies, the drones have been used in more than 60 emergency situations at 22 beaches in Spain. The hope is to expand the use of the beach drones to save lives around the world.

The Pretzel Man

Marcus Moore wants to give the world some “Moore Crunch.” Since October 2022, his pretzel business in Annapolis, Maryland has been doing just that. The 29-year-old founder and CEO of Moore Crunch Pretzels has autism and has always been determined to be self-sufficient. He previously had jobs at grocery stores but was concerned that he wouldn’t be able to support himself as an adult as there wasn’t much opportunity for someone like him to advance in his workplace. After zeroing in on his love for crunchy snacks and with encouragement from his parents, Moore started making pretzels in the family kitchen. Today, he sells his pretzels—in flavors such as garlic buffalo ranch, cinnamon sugar, and Maryland crab—online and in several local stores. Moore says, “I just enjoy doing this. I really do. I love it.” His ambition is to “spread the crunch” by expanding his business to a commercial kitchen and employing people with autism and other disabilities.
