Presidents Message
Happy Summer!
I am thrilled and humbled to serve our members across the state as the incoming President for 2023-2024. As we continue to grow and learn this year, we need every member throughout the state to be involved in your local area to empower students and educate our community members on the importance of our work.
Our board is full with passionate Hoosier Registered Dietitians to serve you throughout this year. Each five Initiative Teams are preparing right now to make this year the best, and in case you aren’t familiar with each team - let’s learn more:
Annual Meeting: Focuses on providing our members with timely, intentional CEUs as well as planning our Annual Meeting (spoiler alert: the meeting will be in person again - YAY!)
IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity & Accessibility): Goal is to increase presence of inclusion, diversity, equity, and access (IDEA) within IAND.
Membership: Last year, several of our districts switched to a region model. While ensuring our districts and regions are supported, the Membership team also focuses on student involvement and ways to enhance your membership.
Public Policy: By providing resources and training, this team works hard to make sure your voice is heard at the state and federal level. The Public Policy team would love to have you attend a meeting with one of our Senators - so if you’re interested, reach out!
Public Initiative: Focuses on marketing dietitians as the nutrition expert to the public, in the media and by participating in community outreach and partnership opportunities. Keep an eye out for upcoming opportunities!
Welcome each of our board members and learn more by clicking here!
Because each Hoosier member does such important work, we would like to spotlight you in our newsletter and social media. Each month we will showcase a different member. To place your name (or a friend) on the docket, complete this quick survey.
Here’s to a great year!
Stay happy and healthy,
Tarrah

Membership Survey, 2023 Results
“We had 95 responses for our membership survey this year. Responses from this annual survey help guide our plan of work for the upcoming year. We learned that many people would likely attend a free fall CEU webinar but have mixed feelings on attending a meeting with a state senator or a future networking event associated with the annual meeting. Our current offerings for serving on the IAND board, such as CEU credit and free annual meeting registration are not strong incentives for our members. If free or reduced AND membership or FNCE registration were offered through the academy, these may serve as stronger motivators to serve.
We asked members about their opinions on the proposed map for regions and districts. 84% were in support, 14% unsure, and 2% disagreed. Many commented they were concerned about wanting to be a member of one district but live in another region or district. It is perfectly okay to live in one area and choose to be a member of a different district or region. Others were concerned about the lack of in-person gatherings and networking events. In-person events are still an option and encouraged. The types of events that are offered are entirely dependent on the needs of the region or district.
We also gathered demographic data for our IDEA committee to use.
Warmly, Katie

"I am the incoming President of the Central Indiana District (CIAND). In my district I have been on the nominating committee and served as treasurer for several terms. In the past I have been very involved at various levels, but never have been a district president, so this will be a new experience."

I work at Indiana University Health as the Food and Nutrition IT Director for ARAMARK Healthcare+ at IU Health. In this role I primarily work with our two CBORD Nutrition Services Suite databases, but I am involved in anything computer-related that ARAMARK uses at IU Health for our department. I work with everything from local Internet service to point of sale systems. I work with all 17 IU Health hospitals and enjoy going to the various locations.
I have always worked in some area of food service management and spent most of my career at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, OH. Besides computers in food and nutrition I have worked with everything from retail foodservice, formula room/milk, basic food production and bulk cook chill systems. After Miami Valley I worked for the CBORD Group, Inc. assisting their clients in implementing systems in health care settings.
I am a forty plus year member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and was a Delegate, President, and Treasurer of the Ohio Dietetic Association. In my dietetic internship at Miami Valley Hospital and early career, I was lucky to have worked with dietitians that were leaders in the profession, that set an example of service to the profession. I have always felt that service to the profession is very important. Early on in my career a co-worker recommended I volunteer with the Commission on Dietetic Registration for question writing for the dietitian and dietetic technician exam. This suggestion turned in to writing questions for the exam in the 1980’s and then many years of volunteering for CDR including an elected term on the Commission Dietetic Registration where I served as Exam Panel Chair. My most valued professional relationships have come through volunteering with CDR. As I’ve worked with dietetic interns over the years, I have tried to pass along how worthwhile and important it is to volunteer and be an active leader in our profession.
