Board Member Spotlight

Melissa Greives, MS, RD, RN

"My favorite part about being a dietitian is helping others and making a difference in their lives. Whether it's helping someone with a chronic disease learn to enjoy food in a healthy way while improving their quality of life or helping someone achieve an ultra-endurance goal with a sound nutrition plan, I feel I am at my best when I am making a difference to someone."
Melissa Greives has been a practicing registered dietitian since 2006 and is a newly appointed IAND board member. When she began her journey to becoming a dietitian, she was initially interested in becoming a sports dietitian, and also fell in love with clinical nutrition along the way. Melissa has always focused on clinical and sports nutrition and she currently teaches Medical Nutrition Therapy and Applied Sports Nutrition (amongst other nutrition courses) as a full-time lecturer at IU Bloomington.

Aside from Melissa's many great accomplishments, she enjoys doing anything outdoors. Melissa enjoys hiking regularly with her family, which includes her husband, twin 6-year-old son and daughter, and 4-year-old son, at Eagle Creek or Holliday Park. She and her family enjoy paddle boarding as a family, and they split their kids up onto their two paddle boards. They also enjoy going on bike rides to Fort Harrison, Monon, or a variety of country roads. Additionally, Melissa loves being at the swimming pool during the summer with her children.

Melissa also enjoys baking as a stress reliever, and says "much to the chagrin of my husband who says a dietitian should never bake as many sweets as I do ;-P"

"Being an IAND member means that I get to connect with like-minded dietitians who broaden my horizons in the field of dietetics, challenge me to continually learn and grow in the field of dietetics, and to make new friendships."

Your participation is requested for the next step in the Academy’s exploration of the Dietitian Licensure Compact!

Providing nutrition care services in multiple states, either in person or through telehealth, requires registered dietitian nutritionists to become licensed according to each state’s requirements, which can be time-consuming and costly. A potential solution to facilitate cost-effective interstate practice for licensed RDNs is a licensure compact.

The Academy was selected through a competitive grant process for Department of Defense funding to work with the Council of State Governments’ National Center for Interstate Compacts on an interstate licensure compact for licensed dietitians. The mobility of licensed RDNs — particularly RDNs who are in the military or whose spouses are in the military — would help alleviate barriers to practice after relocating to a new state.

All practitioners are invited to join a conversation hosted by the Academy and the Council of State Governments on next steps for this effort. Register today to learn more about how the Dietitian Licensure Compact would work, who can use it, the potential benefits to dietitians, and how you can get involved in the public comment period.

Presidents Message

Summer Days

I can’t believe we have reached the end of July! Hopefully you have been able to spend time away from work and relax with family and friends.

Each of our Initiative Teams have been working this summer to create value and exciting events for our IAND members. During our next board meeting, we will discuss each Initiative Teams’ plan of work. I will update you on where the board is headed for this year in the next newsletter.

In the meantime, IAND would like to highlight our Hoosier members in our newsletter and social media. Each month we will spotlight a different member. To place your name (or a friend) on the docket, complete this quick survey.

Stay happy and healthy,
