Hello Friend,
For the last ten years or so, I have hosted a Passover Seder for friends. Every year, we are about 25–30 people—Jews and non-Jews alike. We eat a feast and drink our fair share of the four cups of wine. I like to say that at this Seder, every table is the kids’ table, although as I approach 40, I’m not sure how true that is anymore. This year, as in years past, I was reminded of the great joy in coming together and feeling connected to this tradition, which Jews around the world have participated in for at least two thousand years.
At a time when people are turning away from each other and our nation’s commitment to democracy feels at risk, the morals in the story feel more relevant than ever. By the end of the Seder, I felt strengthened in my gratitude for how far we have come—and how far there is to go—appreciative of the annual reminder that we were strangers once, and encouraged that the people sharing my table seemed committed to similar values.
At the recent Art of Living Gala, I saw a room of hundreds of people united in their commitment to stand up for these shared values. There was a palpable energy and enthusiasm in that room, and watching the paddles go up to blow past the fundraising goal was an incredible feeling. I am grateful to be part of a tradition and a community that does not shy away from the task at hand. Rather, we are motivated to continue doing all that we can to help those around us.
With so much trying to tear us apart, how good and how pleasant it is to be together in unity.

Art of Living 2025
We Did It—Together!
| | |
On April 6, more than 450 members of our community came together for our 2025 Art of Living celebration—and what a night it was!
With the theme Together We Rise, the evening featured a powerful story from our volunteer and a moving conversation between Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nicholas Kristof and KQED’s Mina Kim. Their dialogue reminded us of the hope, resilience, and strength that emerge when we unite in support of one another.
We’re thrilled to share that thanks to your generosity, we exceeded our event fundraising goal and donations are still coming in!
If you haven’t had a chance to give yet, there’s still time. Every gift helps us continue meeting the growing needs in our community. Thank you for rising with us.

Day of Action
This Is How We Do It: Advocacy in Action
| | |
On April 8–9, JFCS East Bay board member Stewart Florsheim joined the Immigrant Day of Action Conference and Rally in Sacramento, hosted by the California Immigrant Policy Center. He met with lawmakers—including Assemblymembers Buffy Wicks and Alex Lee and Senators Jesse Arreguín and Tim Grayson—to advocate for increased funding for immigration legal services.
This work reflects our deep commitment to advancing justice, dignity, and equity for immigrants and refugees. Advocacy is an essential part of our mission to support the individuals and families we serve—not only through direct services, but also by pushing for policies and resources that uplift entire communities.

Client Success:
With Support, We Rise
| | |
When Aaron (name changed) arrived in the U.S. as a Special Immigrant Visa holder that he earned through employment by the US Government in Afghanistan, he faced overwhelming challenges. A non-literate Afghan father of eight with limited English skills, Aaron struggled to adjust to life in a new country.
Through the Refugee Resettlement program at JFCS East Bay, Aaron found a trusted case manager who spoke his language and offered steady support. Together, they tackled key goals—securing housing, navigating public benefits, enrolling in ESL classes, and preparing for the driving test.
Despite setbacks, Aaron persisted. He passed his driving test, learned how to manage his finances, and began searching for work with help from our Refugee Employment Services. He’s also working hard to improve his English skills, using every tool available.
