The ELCA Extravaganza is for anyone who works in children, youth, and family ministry. When it began years ago, the focus was only on youth ministry. However, overtime, the leaders of the youth ministry network recognized a need to expand their focus to help engage children in the life of the church and support the families raising those children and youth. This year I encouraged Katie to attend the E to network with others who work with children and families in ELCA congregations across the country. Here is her reflection about the event:
At the end of January, I went to the Extravaganza. The Extravaganza is the annual gathering of children, youth and family ministry leaders from across the ELCA. I learned so much and had a wonderful time. I was able to meet other youth and children leaders from our synod. I found this extremely helpful as we were able to talk about some things I see at Hope and some things they see at their church and collaborate. Some things that really stood out to me during the E were how inclusive they were. One of the sessions I went to called, "Creating Space for God's Story to Stick." talked about involving the congregation during the children's message and keeping the curriculum for Sunday school (DIT) the same with the message in church. She also talked about making the children's sermon more interactive. Another thing that stuck out to me was how repeatedly speakers talked about including children and youth in church events and activities. After getting back and talking to Pastor Kristin about how we can do this we have worked out how children will be able to start helping during worship.
I look forward to continuing to work with Katie as we also work with all of you to make space for children and youth at Hope as the church together.
