VAST 2019/2020 Speaker Schedule - Wednesday, February 5
Beverly Boren will be our guest artist, demonstrating her fast and loose watercolor style.
Bev Boren was born and raised in Texas and now resides in Trophy Club, Texas. She is a signature member of the Outdoor Painters Society and the Southwestern Watercolor Society. She is also a member of the Oil Painters of America, American Impressionist Society, and American Watercolor Society.
Her work is primarily the result of her need to paint. Inspiration can come at any time and in any place. She loves to paint a variety of subject matter as well as work in various mediums. Boren's paintings are created with things that capture her eye whether it's a still life, landscape, or capturing a person's personality. Painting is her way of connecting with the world and the people around her.
In her words "I want my work to express itself without the necessity of words. My best
hope is that my work will stand simply on it's own, and find a connection with viewers, where words fail."
More of Bev Boren's work can be seen at bevboren.com.
Our next meeting is March 4.
Meetings start at 6:45pm and will be over at 9pm.
The meeting location is the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center, 400
East Hickory St, Denton, TX.
Free for Members Guests: $5

Millie Giles, In Memoriam
Mildred Jo (Millie) Giles
Born: December 10, 1949
Died: November 26, 2019
Mildred Jo "Millie" Giles of Denton, Texas
She was the daughter of the late Samuel William Giles and June C. Giles, who survives, of Bradford. Millie married Robert L. Erdle on Aug. 21,1976; he preceded her in death on Jan. 30, 2006. She and her husband served as faculty members, together at the University of North Texas for many years. After her husband's death she was appointed coordinator of the Watercolor Concentration.
Millie Giles held the following degrees: Master of Fine Arts in Painting and Drawing; Master of Arts in Painting; Bachelor's Degree in Art Education. At one point in her career, she served as director of the Chautauqua Art Association Galleries, in Chautauqua, N.Y. For over 25 years she was the critic for the VAST Painters of Denton, Texas. The co-owner of Watercolor World Wide Inc., she accompanied painters to exotic spots throughout the world to paint during the summer months. After retiring, she volunteered at both
the Salvation Army and Habitat for Humanity. But the greatest honor of her life involved designing the 30-foot CORETEN Steel Firefighters 911 Memorial Bell Tower for the Denton Firefighters.
Although she left Bradford many years ago, Millie never forgot the sound of the oil wells pumping at night as a child and never stopped missing the hills.
Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery where she walked many an afternoon with her grandmother.
Millie Giles was honored posthumously by the City of Denton at the City Council Meeting on January 7. Mayor Chris Watts read a Proclamation and declared the day to be Millie Giles Day. This was followed by a moving film of the Bell Tower which highlighted the ringing of the bell. Friends and former students were in attendance.

Art Judges Needed in Plano!
Can You Help?
Winterfest
Feb. 8, 2020
Jasper High School
6800 Archgate Dr Plano,TX 75024 Site Director: Jillian Reilly
The German Regional contest is in desperate need of art judges for the following events. It usually takes 1 to 2 hours to judge. Refreshments will be provided. The judging takes place between 9 and 12. If you could volunteer to judge in one or several of the categories it would be a tremendous help. There will be a director in charge of the contest who can answer any questions or just ask me since I have been going to this and working with it since 1972. Let me know if you can do this and I will get your names to Beth Smith the coordinator who is in a panic right now.
Thanks,
Gail

Pas de deux is a ballet term meaning step of two, a partner's dance that includes parts when the partners perform together but also separately in solos as part of a longer grand performance, showcasing their skills as individuals and a team.
The Greater Denton Arts Council has joined up with couples varying in age, skill, and media to present our version of a visual arts pas de deux. Couples have been invited to showcase their individual works and if they have any collaborations. The aim is to show how artists influence and support each other through their close relationships with their fellow artist.
