Hopeful for the Best, Preparing for the Worst

The news this week has underscored just how vulnerable our community is to the impacts of this continued government shutdown. The growing concern of SNAP and WIC being un- or under-funded is threatening entire communities and food supply chains alike.

CUMAC was already serving the largest number of families in our 40-year history. Now, the convergence of furloughs and threats to lifelines like SNAP and WIC are poised to be catastrophic for the tens-of-thousands of families we serve. Families who were just getting by are now searching for answers on how to actually survive this potential reality.

This is what brings them to our trusted, open doors. But the truth is, we were already restocking our shelves multiple times per day. Staff and volunteers have already been working tirelessly to move food into the Marketplace at an alarming rate.

Demand continues to outpace supply.

While we remain hopeful for the best, we are preparing for the worst.

We have a plan to meet the moment: to continue serving a variety of fresh foods, to extend our hours to accommodate even more families, to keep our volunteer shifts full, to collaborate and maximize resources among critical partners.

But to adequately prepare, we need all hands on deck...

We need funds.

We need food.

We need you to act today.

Your generosity will directly help us feed more families, keep our doors open longer, and ensure no one in our community goes hungry. Every single gift—no matter the amount—has a tangible impact.

With sincerity and gratitude,

Jessica Padilla Gonzalez
