Weekly Eblast 9/2/22
Grades 3 thru 6 only visit the Library every other week! For some, this is NOT enough! Sometimes they need a book sooner!

Our Library uses Destiny to catalogue ALL books in our collection. You and your student can access this program at home or at school. When searching for a book, please visit Destiny. This site is linked on the Horizon webpage, as well. You may search by title, subject, author, lexile level, genre or even keyword. Students will learn this during their Library time.

Students can email Mrs. Duet or Mrs. Dickson for book requests and we will deliver them to their classrooms. Please reach out if you have any questions!
The Scholastic Book Fair will be here Sept. 26th - 29th from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm daily, mark your calendars!

This is the same week as Elementary Summative. Please visit before your students Summative for Book purchases, we will also have Teacher Wish Boxes (books teachers WISH they had in the classroom!) Elementary students will visit during their regular Library time.

Students 1st - 6th grade may bring cash, card or use EWALLET.
Take a sneak peak at the Book Fair Flyer!

If you are interested in helping out with the Book Fair, we would love to have adult helpers! We use SignUp.com for our Volunteers. Reach out to Mindy Duet if you have any questions.

If you have any funds left in your EWALLET from last year, those funds become an eGift Card. This is how to convert left over funds to a current Book Fair EWALLET.
Horizon Honors Elementary uses an online organizational tool called SignUp.com which helps make signing up to volunteer easy and efficient. Elementary Field Days, Fun Runs, Field Trip Chaperone and Art Masterpiece Presenter and Helpers are just a few events you can sign up for via your students classroom calendar. In addition to the above activities, watch for opportunities via school e-blasts and K-6 Classroom Coordinator emails. Follow the steps below and find out more about a specific volunteer opportunity.

  1. Fill out a Volunteer Application, this must be completed and processed prior to helping on campus. Please know the application does take 24 hours to process. The volunteer application needs to be completed at the beginning of each school year.
  2. Sign up using SignUp.com. Just click on your student's classroom to sign up. 5-6 parents and guardians please choose your students project group teacher unless directed otherwise.
  3. Please bring your driver's license with you and check in at the Elementary office. If you are helping out in the classroom please read the Classroom Volunteer Guidelines and reach out if you have any questions.

We appreciate you taking the time to volunteer...it makes a difference!
When kids are young, the voices that guide them are their parents or caregivers, especially their mom. Mom’s voice serves as a direction and a conscience, and research shows that kids are keenly able to distinguish between their mother’s voice and that of strangers. But, it all shifts when they reach adolescence.
research team at the Stanford School of Medicine observed the reactivity of the adolescent brain to the sounds of different voices and discovered through fMRI machines that their brain is extra sensitive to the voices of people outside their parents.
They are less interested in what their parents (mom especially) have to say, and their brains are literally extra activated when they hear other voices.
While they shift from listening to their parents to listening to their peers, the most significant and healthy shift a kid can make is ultimately to listen to their own voice.
If a kid can start reflecting on their own values, principles, beliefs, and priorities, then they’re well on their way to mature adulthood.
The question is, how do you guide a kid to listen to their own inner voice?
Here are 3 tips:
  1. It’s important to express to your kid that it’s possible. Let them know how important it is to be thoughtful and reflective throughout their lives, not to mention throughout the day.
  2. You can model to them what it looks like by sharing stories about your everyday life and the moments you decided to take a step back and listen to your own voice.
  3. Be on the lookout for opportunities to celebrate your kid when they choose to listen to their own inner voice. When they share a story with you about their day, ask them why they made the choices they did. If they say something like, “Well, I just didn’t want to do that,” then affirm their choice to listen to themselves.
Chances are, all of our kids are going to be put in situations with their peers where they’re tempted to make a choice that would harm them or at least violate their values.
If we can help them recognize the importance of listening to their own inner voice rather than seeking the approval of others, they’ll be better equipped to make a healthy, wise choice.
