PATRIOT DAY, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11

Horizon Honors Elementary will be providing age- appropriate education in accordance with House Bill 2325 to be observed on Wednesday, September 11. "September 11 of each year (will be recognized) as 9/11 Education Day and requires public schools to dedicate a portion of the school day to age-appropriate education on the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. September 11, or the nearest school day, schools must provide education for a portion of the school day on the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001." This day is to honor all those who lost their lives in the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. DROP OFF AND PICK UP REMINDERS:

  • Follow all traffic laws.
  • Keep pulling forward when using the drive through line in the morning and afternoon. Staff members will get your student to your car safely at dismissal.

ELECTRONIC DEVICES


Agree to abide by the following use for my personal technology devices (examples include: phones, tablets, earbuds/pods, gaming devices, and smartwatches):


  • Grades K-4 – No personal technology devices allowed on school grounds.
  • Grades 5-6 – Personal technology devices are only allowed for home and family communication after school.
  • Personal technology devices must be turned off and secured in student’s backpack before and during the school day.
  • Grades 7-8 – Personal technology devices must be turned off and secured in student’s backpack during the school day.
  • Devices are not to be used during the school day, which includes transitions, breaks, and lunchtime unless permitted by a staff member.
  • Grades 9-12 – Personal technology devices are allowed for appropriate use before and after school, passing times, and lunchtime. For all other times, students must have permission from a staff member. (Horizon Honors Schools Family Handbook, page 20-21)

BOOK DRIVE FOR SENIOR CENTER

R. Crosby is a Life Scout in Troop 278. He is collecting children and teen books for his Eagle Project. The books will be donated to Grandfamilies Place, a multigenerational senor center. Please donate any new or used books in the box located in the Elementary off by Friday, September 27.

5-6 GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

The season schedule can be found here. Select Horizon Honors Middle, select view schedules on the right, and pick 5/6 volleyball to narrow the search. Every game will show you a Google Maps address.

5-6 Student Council and Service Club are sponsoring a school supply drive now through Monday, September 30. All of the following items will be donated to the Kyrene Resource Center:


  • Paper and pencils
  • Markers and colored pencils
  • Rulers and glue
  • Folders, binders and notecards
  • You name it!


Bins will be located near the MPR. Thank you for your support!

THE BOOK FAIR IS COMING!


The fall Book Fair will start September 23 and run through September 26 daily from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. It will be open during Elementary Summative. Elementary students will visit the Book Fair during their regularly scheduled library times, we appreciate any extra helping hands.


We would love to have you volunteer! We need help on the following days:

  • September 20 to help set up. 
  • September 23 - 26 help during the fair.
  • September 27 to help clean up.


If interested please Sign Up Here. A Volunteer Application must be completed and approved prior to helping on campus. Please use your legal name as it appears on your state or U.S. government issued ID and check in at the front office before your scheduled time.


Students 1st thru 6th grade are allowed to bring cash to purchase books during their classroom visits, with your permission.  You know your student best, if you want to shop with your student, you can come during their classroom visit, before or after school or before or after summative.

  

We will accept Cash, Check, Credit Card, Apple Pay OR you can set up an EWallet ahead of time. To set up an EWallet please follow the link on the Scholastic Book Fair homepage.  


If you miss the in person Book Fair, you can shop online, the school will still get credit for all sales.

For the fifth year, Arizona State Treasurer Kimberly Yee and the AZ529 Education Savings Plan are hosting an essay contest for kids. The 2024 Essay Writing Contest invites Arizona 5th and 6th graders to submit essays explaining their dream job and the steps they’ll take to reach it. Winners will receive $529 toward an AZ529 Education Savings Plan to fund their future educational aspirations!

 

Open to all current 5th and 6th grade students in Arizona’s district, charter, private schools, homeschools, and tribal schools. Answer the question, “What is your dream job and how do you plan on achieving it in the future?” (350 words or less).

 

Entries accepted through October 6, 2024 at 11:59 PM (MST). Limit one entry per student.



Twenty (20) prizes, each in the amount of $529, will be awarded towards a new or existing AZ529 Education Savings Plan. Winners will be selected from each of Arizona’s 15 counties and there will also be winners representing all types of schools, including district, charter, private schools, homeschools, and tribal schools.
