CONGRATS, REGIONAL HONOR BAND MUSICIANS!

Congrats to Brendan Adam, Spencer Sims and Sarah Spresney, who were chosen for the AMEA Regional Honor Band!

They completed a difficult audition and were selected as part of the top high school band musicians in our region of the state.  They will rehearse for two days this Friday and Saturday and give a performance February 14th at Camelback High School.

ABSENCE PROCEDURE REMINDERS

When a student needs to be absent, parents should email attendance@horizonhonors.org before 9 a.m. each day the student is absent. State law mandates that the school record a reason for all student absences. This greatly reduces the need to call you at work or home to confirm the absence. When e-mailing, please give the child’s name (with spelling), date of absence, grade level and reason for absence, along with a telephone number where you can be reached in case of questions. The absence will be unexcused if no reason is given within 24 hours of the absence.

LATE ARRIVAL & LEAVING EARLY

Any time a student arrives after the official start time, the student and parent are required to sign-in at the front desk. Students risk loss of credit in courses when they are absent more than 10 days in a semester or if they miss a significant amount of instruction (at least 1/4 of class) due to late arrival. To excuse a late arrival, a parent must sign a student in with the reason or e-mail within 24 hours. Parents picking up students early from school are required to report to the front desk and sign the student out. This includes students of driving age. Only a parent or adult designee (age 18 or over) with valid ID who is listed as an emergency contact in PowerSchool may sign a student out of school. Essential instruction occurs during all school hours. Habitual excused or unexcused late arrivals or early dismissals may result in loss of course credit and/or failure to be promoted to the next grade level (Policy JH).

CIVIC ACTION AND LESS SCREEN TIME? YES, PLEASE

What if one of the most effective ways to reduce kids’ screen time had nothing to do with limits, apps, or lectures and everything to do with purpose?

This week, I witnessed something that felt genuinely hopeful: hundreds of tweens and teens choosing to show up, in person, energized and connected, all working to make the world a healthier place.

Many of these young people are taking on Big Tobacco, pushing back against the same forces that put vaping and nicotine products into their social feeds and neighborhood stores. In fact, teens recently helped make history by getting the first two towns in the U.S. to ban the sale of nicotine products entirely, which is explained in yesterday’s podcast

This isn’t just about substance prevention. It’s about civic engagement, belonging, and giving kids something meaningful to fight for. Curious how your child can get involved? Read today’s blog.
