Letter from PSC to Utility Engineering and Surveying Institute (UESI)
The Utility Engineering and Surveying Institute (UESI), a subset of the American Society of Civil Engineers, has been promoting the use of Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) and Subsurface Utility Mapping (SUM) reports in Canada. These reports are typically completed by a Professional Engineer who is also a Professional Surveyor in the American Model. PSC has an interest in developing standards for the Canadian equivalent, which keeps in mind the protection of the public interest through the proper definition of professional engineering and professional surveying services.

Please read the open letter from PSC to UESI here.

Lettre à l’Utility Engineering and Surveying Institute (UESI)

Call for speakers

PSC is looking for public speakers among its membership available for industry conferences and events. If you are interested in being available to speak on the following topics, or other topics relevant to the professional surveying community, please contact Administrative Coordinator Helen Derry.

  1. Underground infrastructure mapping – The importance of mapping and surveying UI, the three primary positions of PSC, and the future implications of good or poor geospatial data management for UI.
  2. Effect and liabilities arising from the location of lot corners or property boundaries by municipalities. Legal framework protecting the public through land surveyors acts and regulations and horror stories arising from the unauthorized practice of surveying.
  3. The role and importance of the land surveyor in the real estate transaction. The difference between a survey and title insurance and the value brought to property and landowners through hiring a professional surveyor.

  1. Cartographie de l’infrastructure souterraine (IS) – L’importance de cartographier et d’arpenter l’IS, les trois grandes positions de GPC, et les implications futures d’une bonne ou d’une mauvaise gestion des données géospatiales pour l’IS.
What you Need to Know About your Professional Liability
When you Retire or Sell your Land Surveying Business
By Mark Sampson, BBA, FCIP
Over the past five years, I have travelled across the country meeting and conversing with land surveyors from every jurisdiction. The most common question I receive is “what is my liability as a professional land surveyor when I retire or sell my practice?” I also get monthly emails and phone calls from surveyors asking the same question. Therefore, I thought it would be helpful to write an article on the subject.

About the Author:
Mark Sampson is the insurance broker who manages the professional liability insurance program for Professional Surveyors Canada, the Association of Ontario Land Surveyors, and the Ordre des arpenteurs-géomètres du Québec.

Lawmakers approve bill to end state regulation of certain wetlands
IndyStar
In the waning hours of the legislative session Wednesday, lawmakers approved a bill opposed by the state's own Department of Environmental Management that would end state protection of certain wetlands.
Senate Bill 229 removes state oversight of certain wetlands near what are called regulated drains, which are thousands of miles of man-made ditches, streams, sewers and drainage pipes constructed throughout Indiana in the past century to alleviate flooding. Read more
Surveyors tackling resurvey of Mason-Dixon Line

PITTSBURGH — A group of surveyors from Pennsylvania and Maryland starting this year plan to create a new record of what might be America’s most famous border: the Mason-Dixon Line.
Members of both states’ surveyor societies will help survey the 196-mile border stretching from Delaware to the southeastern tip of Fayette County, where Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia meet, said Richard A. Why car dealerships could be the key to redrawing county boundaries
U of A student proposes amalgamating 296 Saskatchewan counties into just 38, mapped around towns most likely to be local commercial centres.

In an effort to strengthen civic life in rural Saskatchewan, a University of Alberta geophysics student used the economic health of the nearest small-town auto dealerships as a measure for viability to redraw the boundaries of its municipalities.
The boundaries for Saskatchewan’s rural municipalities have stayed virtually unchanged for more than a century, despite 70 years of uninterrupted rural population decline, explained Alex McPhee, bachelor of science student and cartography enthusiast. Read more
