In October 2008 Satoshi Nakamoto published a ten-page document entitled "Bitcoin, a peer-to-peer electronic cash system". In it he solved an age-old cryptographic puzzle, and birthed a new, dazzlingly simple way to secure data: Blockchain. To this day nobody knows who Satoshi Nakamoto is, yet Blockchain quickly became the new standard for securing critical, sensitive information in our data-driven world. Stranger than fiction? Absolutely!

In this webinar Chris will explain what blockchain is, how it is being used to protect our data and secure better processes, and what the potential is for the land industry.

In this webinar you will learn:
•   What is blockchain, what is it for, and how does it work?
•   What is Bitcoin, Etherium and cryptocurrency, and what is their relationship to blockchain?
•   How is blockchain relevant to our industry?
•   Scams and shams - cutting through the noise to get to what's important.
•   What $10 of Bitcoin bought in 2010 would be worth today ( wouldn't be attending this webinar!)

Fatal gas line explosion in Murrieta a warning for home contractors
Los Angeles Times
Southern California Gas Co. said a huge explosion Monday at a house in Murrieta, Calif., that left a utility worker dead and 15 others injured underscores the dangers of home improvements and construction without following gas safety rules.
Cedric Williams, the company’s vice president of construction, said a preliminary investigation shows that a contractor at the house did not call the utility’s designated 811 line so that workers could come mark the gas lines, as required by law. There is no record of the contractor filing a ticket with the company, he said.  Read more

Online Land Surveying / Geomatics Degree Program
Great Basin College, Nevada
The online land surveying/geomatics bachelor degree program of applied science was co-developed by Great Basin College (GBC) and the Nevada Association of Land Surveyor’s Advisory Committee. The land surveying/ geomatics program was implemented in response to the growing need for licensed professional surveyors in Nevada to capture, store, process, and manage spatial data. The four-year bachelor’s degree program in land surveying/geomatics has served Nevada students and distance learners from around the country effectively since its inception in 2005. The land surveying/geomatics program model is ideally structured for students who are employed (or seeking employment) in a surveying or geospatial related profession that require the flexibility and accessibility to coursework delivered outside the typical undergraduate learning environment. Australia Celebrates 65 Years of the Mawson Research Station
The Maritime Executive
Antarctic veterans celebrated 65 years since the opening of Mawson research station at the Australian Antarctic Division last week.
Mawson is one of Australia's three permanent research stations in Antarctica, and is the longest continuously operating station south of the Antarctic Circle.
Acting Director, Rob Bryson, reflected on the changes since the early years of Australian Antarctic exploration, when much of the Antarctic continent had not been seen or mapped, huskies were a vital mode of transport and having a shower meant heating snow on a coal briquette stove.
For Australian National Antarctic Research Expedition (ANARE) surveyor, Syd Kirkby, the place and the people saw him return six times after his first winter in 1956-57. Read more

Aussies Find the True Meaning of Drone Flight
Ah, stereotypes. Once they’ve solidified it’s surprisingly hard to shake them. When non-Australians think of a generic Aussie then, the chances are that a Crocodile Dundee type of character will spring to mind — a ‘Strine-speaking outdoorsman with a beer in hand. This group of Aussies aren’t helping the case, with a video posted by Australian drone retailer UAVme and featured by ABC News where a large multirotor lifts a guy in a lawn chair, beer in hand, over a lake to do some fishing.
