Horizon West Middle School
HWMS Community Member,

We have had a great first two weeks of school! We are so happy to have all of our Hornets back on campus buzzing around! Students have already started to be engaged in rigorous classroom instruction and learning the policies and procedures of Horizon West Middle School.

Just a few reminders for our families:
  • Students can be dropped off at school no earlier than 9:00am. The students are unsupervised under the car loop pavilion before 9:00am. If you are in the car loop before 9:00am, students must stay in your vehicle with their families before this time.
  • Please follow all traffic procedures for arrival and dismissal.
  • Schedule changes: Our counselors have begun working on schedule change requests and balancing classes. Your student will receive an email if their request is approved.
  • Health and safety- Any student who is feeling ill, or exhibiting Covid symptoms, should stay home and consult a medical professional. Please do not come to school if you are sick and/or waiting on results from a prior Covid test.
  • Breakfast and Lunch- All students are eligible for a free breakfast and lunch.
  • Delayed Dismissal is where we cannot dismiss students as we normally have due to inclement weather in the area. This is the time of the school year we have these frequently. Thank you for your patience with our procedures in order to keep all our staff and students safe.

We have had a wonderful start to our school year. Please, don’t forget to regularly visit www.horizonwestms.ocps.net to get more information concerning all things Horizon West Middle School.

Remember, we are all in this together, we are here to help and we are #HornetsBackAndBetterThanEver

Thank you for your continued support!

Student Code of Conduct
Please review with your student.
It is important that students understand the policies and procedures of OCPS. Please take a moment and review with your child a copy of the OCPS Student Code of Conduct. The student Code of Conduct can be found on your child’s Canvas Dashboard. Also, please review the Student Dress Code section with your child found in the Code of Conduct. Thank you!!
Cell Phones
Students must silence and put away cell phones at 9:25 every morning.
Cell phones should be placed in a student backpack or purse and not removed until students sit down for lunch. At the end of lunch, students will be reminded to place their phones back in their bags. Please make sure your student is following this policy as cell phones that are visible may be confiscated.
i-Ready Diagnostic Assessment
Students will be completing the i-Ready Reading and Math Diagnostic test in the coming weeks.
It is imperative that your student is here and takes this assessment seriously. The results from this diagnostic will determine their individualized curriculum throughout this school year. Also, for this assessment all students will need a pair of earbuds/headphones that plug into their laptop. This was posted on our school supply list during the summer, so please make sure that child is prepared.
Horizon West OPEN HOUSE
September 28th, 5:30 -7:00 PM
Mark your calendars! Tuesday, September 28th from 5:30-7:00 PM, we will be holding our Annual Open House. This event will give parents the opportunity to walk their child’s schedule and meet each of their teachers. Remember this event is to get a brief overview of each student’s class and is not the time for a parent/teacher conference or to discuss specific student needs. If you would like more time with all of your student’s teachers, please send them an email or call your grade level guidance counselor to set up a meeting.
Fall Picture Day
Mark your calendars - Thursday, September 2, 2021
Wednesday: Horizon West Spirit Day and Friday: Collegiate Day
Please show your spirit on Wednesdays and Fridays!
Every Wednesday is our School Spirit Day! Wear your blue, yellow and black to show your Hornet spirit! And on Fridays our Hornet teachers and students wear college gear to show their support for their favorite collegiate teams or the college they attended!

Pre-Planning Week
2021 Highlights
Our teachers worked hard during their annual pre-planning week preparing their classrooms, attending meetings and creating lesson plans. On Friday, of pre-planning we ended the busy week with a faculty cookout and painting time with Mrs. Wilson. Check out the awesome Hornet creations by our teachers!
Delayed Dismissal
Please be aware of the 30/30 Weather Rule.
We will only make a Connect Ed call to our parents when we have a DELAYED DISMISSAL due to 30/30 or other severe weather. If we are on a 30/30 nearing dismissal time, please understand that we will need your  patience during the DELAYED DISMISSAL process.

Our students' safety is of the utmost importance and we appreciate your cooperation when we have a DELAYED DISMISSAL. As we all know, Florida weather can be so unpredictable. Thank you in advance for you patience as we want all of our students to be dismissed safely.

Hornet Happenings!
Highlights from the first few days of the new year:
Mrs. Patrick’s 7th Grade Accelerated Math class kicked off a week of review and learning with “Integer War”. Similar to the childhood card game “War”, opponents go head-to-head in a duel where they have to calculate the sum of the integers; red cards are negative integers and black cards are positive integers. Whoever calls out the sum first, wins the cards! First to collect all the cards is the WINNER!
Students diving into digital learning during the first weeks of school!
In Ms. Martinez’s 8th Grade Science class students applied the scientific method to investigate which column design would hold the most books. The results were surprising! Students doing science, scientist’s at work!

Friday's Motivational Moment!
THE TOP TEN HIGH-VALUE USES OF YOUR TIME
Things that advance your overall life purpose.

Things you have always wanted to do.

Things that others say can't be done.

Things that help you grow to your maximum potential.

Things that develop other people's ability to achieve and lead.

Things that multiply - rather than merely add - value to yourself and others.

Things that harness your creativity.

Things you can delegate to others.

Things that promote teamwork and synergy.

Things that are now or never opportunities.
