The first day of school is Wednesday, August 10th. We are so very excited to have all our Hornet students join us on campus for the 2022-2023 school year!! We welcome our new 6th graders and returning 7th and 8th grade students! It’s going to be a great school year!
Teachers are already back for pre-planning and have been getting classrooms and lesson plans prepared! We are very busy but can’t wait for all the Hornet students to be back on Wednesday! We have put together this SPECIAL EDITION of our Community Brief as a resource for all our parents, students and community to get organized and ready for a successful start of the new year. Please take care in reading this edition. Many questions and details are given so each and every Hornet will start Wednesday on a positive note.

Also, a reminder that our first day, Wednesday is an early release day, students will be released at 2:57 pm.

Remember, we are all in this together, we are here to help and we are #ThrivingHornets!
We look forward to seeing everyone on the first day of school!

Sincerely,

Michelle Thomas

On Wednesday, students will report to their first period teacher that is indicated on their schedule. A finalized schedule will be provided on the first day in their first period class.
Once you have your schedule and you know your classes, you will want to take some time to prepare for Wednesday...

● Get your backpack ready with a few school supplies for day one.
● You may want to pack lunch for the first few days as you get ready and adjusted to our lunch room and daily schedule.
● Get out your first day outfit (make sure it is in dress code).
● Print a copy of your child’s schedule or have them write it down in a notebook. Be sure to include room and building numbers.
● Write your bus # on a notebook or save it in your phone.

Arrival Procedures:
Students will not be allowed to enter the campus until 9:00 am, unless they are registered in the Boys & Girls Club. Students will enter through the cafeteria area or bus loop. For car riders, please follow the traffic patterns and drop off in the designated area located right outside the cafeteria. There will be several staff members and a resource officer there to assist. To ensure the traffic runs as smoothly as possible, only parents who need to register their child will be allowed to park outside of the front office and enter the campus.
Take a few moments and discuss school behavior with your student. You can review some policies and procedures in our OCPS Student Code of Conduct that can be found at ocps.net.

Below are some of the other policies that are important for our students to be aware of:

Cell Phone Policies
At 9:25 when the morning bell rings all cell phones and electronic devices/support items (earbuds, earpods, headphones, tablets, gaming systems, smart devices; electronics other than a school issued laptop) should be turned off and placed in a student backpack; out of sight (not in their pockets). These items should be kept put away during transition from class to class and during class times. Students who are not following procedures for cell phones/electronic device police may have their cell phone/electronic device/support item taken to a grade level office and parents will be called. If a student continues to not follow the Cell Phone/Electronic Device Policy a parent will be called to pick up the cell phone/item during regular school hours.

Respect
Students are expected to be respectful of others at all times; this includes fellow students, teachers and any adult on campus. Talk about what respectful behavior looks like. If your child is having an issue with another student, please encourage them to speak with their dean or counselor to advocate for their feelings.
At the start and end of each period, students will hear a bell to give you a time warning. When you hear music playing, you should know that now you only have 30 secs to get into your class.

Students will move in the hallways all following the same direction. This helps with flow of traffic and efficiency getting from class to class. Everyone goes in on the right side of the hallway and exits on the left side. Right stairwells are for going up, the left are for going down.

If you need any help during the day, please just ask an adult. We are all here to help you and get you where you are supposed to be.
All students will have a scheduled lunch (A, B, or C). Lunch is approximately 30 minutes long. Students may sit where they would like. We have our lunch lines and also a snack line. However, you must have money on your SchoolPay account to purchase snacks. Lunch the first few days can be hectic, so you may want to pack a lunch until you feel comfortable making your purchases.

This year, free lunches are no longer being offered to all students. We are back to what it was like before the pandemic where parents need to apply every school year for meal benefits. Those students approved for free & reduced status eat breakfast & lunch at no charge and those who did not qualify pay full price ($1.75 for breakfast combo & $2.75 for lunch combo).

If your child will require free or reduced lunch, be sure to apply at:

Each day at 3:57 the school day is over, 2:57 on Wednesday. Reminder that the FIRST DAY of school is on a Wednesday (so students will be released an hour early).  Students will be dismissed and are expected to leave campus immediately. Students should not be wandering the campus or waiting for friends.

Car riders will be given car tags to assist with an efficient dismissal. For parents of car riders, we ask that you please follow the traffic patterns and remain in your car until you pull up to the curb for your child to get in. We ask that all car rider parents pull up as far as you can so that we can load as many students into cars at one time. We want to be respectful of our community neighbors and follow all arrival and dismissal patterns. Thank you for your cooperation with this.

Student bus riders go to the bus loop right away, as buses leave promptly.
Our custodians worked very hard to thoroughly clean our campus this summer!

Thank you to our awesome custodial team!
