Horizon West Middle School
HWMS Community Member,

Can you believe it – it is almost time for SPRING BREAK! This year has been flying by and our teachers have been working hard to prepare for the annual spring assessments while our students are showing great progress.

When we return from spring break we will be just around the corner from our first big FSA Assessment, FSA Writes in April. Here’s how you can help your student be successful: make sure children get enough sleep the night before tests, eat a healthy breakfast the day of tests, and arrive on time to school on testing days. Most importantly, stay positive! Let’s encourage our students to do their best on the upcoming annual exams. You can visit our Parents page at www.OCPS.net for more information.

As a parent/guardian, you can also help out HWMS by completing our annual family survey as families are one of the greatest resources behind the overall success of our school. We are conducting the family survey as part of our ongoing school improvement efforts, so please invest a few moments today and click the link below for the survey.

We value your opinion. Please be assured that your responses will be anonymous and that your feedback is greatly appreciated.

Don’t forget to regularly visit www.horizonwestms.ocps.net to get more information concerning all things Horizon West Middle School.

Here are the highlights for this week. Have a great weekend and thank you for your continued support!

Michelle Thomas

March Calendar & Special Events
March is Women's History Month
About Women's History Month
Women’s History Month had its origins as a national celebration in 1981 when Congress passed Pub. L. 97-28 which authorized and requested the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982 as “Women’s History Week.” Throughout the next five years, Congress continued to pass joint resolutions designating a week in March as “Women’s History Week.” In 1987 after being petitioned by the National Women’s History Project, Congress passed Pub. L. 100-9 which designated the month of March 1987 as “Women’s History Month.” (WomensHistoryMonth.gov)

  • Please also be sure to send your child to school with an extra mask. Thank you.

On testing days it is important that your student is on time to school and remains in school for the entire day. Most tests will be completed by lunch, however technology issues can happen and sometimes testing may take longer than expected.

Below are some important tips for testing from the Florida Department of Education that further explain the rules our students are expected to follow during test administration.

Earbuds Needed for Testing
Horizon West Middle School – Digital Moment
All schools within OCPS, utilize a program called LanSchool Air to monitor students’ computer use while on or off campus. Teachers are able to see as soon as a student logs into their computer everything the student types, searching and exactly what is on their screen. This is a great tool for our teachers to make sure students stay on task and remain good digital citizens.
  • Students should also remember that deleting programs like LanSchool Air off their laptop is a violation of the Digital Acceptable Use Policy and could result in a student receiving a consequence.
Rigor in the Classroom - 3D Art Students
Our 3D Art students created food sculptures made from only toilet paper and water! They painted them with watercolor and acrylic paints. Here are some of our face to face students' work, along with several LaunchED art pieces.

PTSO Message
New PTSO Board Members Needed for 2021-2022
Dear Hornet Families,

As we close in on the end of our third nine weeks, we can’t help but reflect on the challenging year we have had. The PTSO is thankful for your support of the HWMS family and community. We are hoping as the year moves on that our Fall 2021 will take on a different shape, and gatherings will once again take place. With this in mind, the PTSO is looking for new parents to help carry on the charge of bridging the community and school gap at our school… it means, we need you!

Our current PTSO Board opened the school and are moving up and out of middle school quickly and we need more parents to step up in little ways. Please consider being part of this organization. Just fill out this link HWMS PTSO INTEREST to let us know you have an interest in keeping the PTSO going.

Thank you for your continued support!

Closing Images of the Week: Digital Learning Day
Thursday, February 25
This week, we were excited to join the School Board of Orange County in celebrating the 10th annual Digital Learning Day on Thursday, February 25, 2021!

Digital Learning Day promotes the effective use of modern day tools to improve the learning experience in K-12 public schools. This year’s theme is Together We are Better.

Nearly 12 months ago, educators all across the nation, were tasked with meeting the needs of students via remote and distance learning due to the start of the what we now know as the COVID-19 pandemic.

Horizon West has been honored to have such brilliant, talented and innovative educators that have taken digital learning to the next level in their classrooms. Below we have included just a few examples of these amazing educators and their students for the community as we celebrated Digital Learning Day 2021!
