Connect With HWMS
Horizon West Middle School

We are about halfway into the third quarter of the school year. Our teachers have been working hard to prepare and our students are showing progress. We want to lead them to success. Here's how you can help: make sure children get enough sleep the night before tests; eat a healthy breakfast and arrive on time to school. Most importantly, stay positive. Another great help is to sit down with your student and have them show you their grades in Canvas and in Skyward. Let's encourage our students to do their best on the tests. You can visit our Parents page at www.OCPS.net for more information.

As a parent you can also help out our school by completing our Annual Parent Survey. Our parents are one of our greatest resources to the success of our school. In an effort to improve school practices, Horizon West Middle School is conducting a Parent Survey as a part of our ongoing improvement to our school. Please take a moment and click the link below to take this year's survey . . .

Thank you to our School Counselors, Ms. Bider, Ms. Farrell and Ms. Callendar for all they do to support our students.

Horizon West Digital Moment

All schools with in OCPS, utilize a program called LanSchool to monitor students' computer use while on campus. Teachers are able to see as soon as a student logs into their computer everything the student types, searching and exactly what is on their screen. This is a great tool for our teachers to make sure students stay on task and are good digital citizens.

Students should also remember that deleting programs like LanSchool off their laptop is a violation of the Digital Acceptable Use Policy and could result in students receiving a consequence.

Horizon West Tutoring

As we come closer to the FSA and EOC Assessments, Horizon West Middle School has put in place several tutoring opportunities. Currently, there is tutoring in 6-8th Grade ELA and Math, 8th Grade Science and 7th Grade Civics.

Students we invited to tutoring were sent home with a permission slip and received an exclusive ConnectEd Message from Principal Thomas. If you are interested in tutoring for a subject area, please contact your students teachers via email.

Also, we have Power Hour tutoring happening every Tuesday for Language Arts and Thursday for Math. Power Hour is focused instruction for students who are looking towards achieving higher scores on their FSA assessments. If you are interested in Power Hour tutoring, email [email protected]

First day of POWER HOUR on February 4th

Classroom Spotlight
Math with Ms. Pivarsi

Our teachers at Horizon West Middle School are very dedicated to our students and making Horizon West home. Some of our teachers have gone out of the way in making their classrooms a wonderful calm and innovative environment. We wanted to make sure we highlighted these teachers and the great work they have put in to not only their instruction, but also their classroom family.

Friday's Motivational Moment!

A STORMY NIGHT

Late one blustery night, an elderly couple dashed out of the rain and into the lobby of a small Philadelphia hotel, hoping to secure a room for the night. But much to their disappointment, the hotel was full.

"There are three conventions in town," said the cheerful front desk clerk. "I'm afraid all the hotels are full."

The couple started to turn away, and the clerk continued, "But I can't send a nice couple like you out in the rain at one o'clock in the morning. Would you be willing to sleep in my room? It's not exactly a suite," he added, "but it will make you comfortable for the night."

The couple was reluctant to put the man out, but he insisted. "Don't worry about me. I'll make out just fine," he said, and they finally accepted his offer.

When they checked out the next morning, the elderly gentleman said to the clerk, "You are the kind of manager who should be the boss of the best hotel in the United States. Maybe someday I'll build one for you." The man at the desk simply smiled and thanked them.

Two years later, the hotel clerk received a letter from the elderly gentleman. In it was a round trip ticket to New York City and a note. The note reminded the clerk of the night he had helped the couple and invited him to come up to visit them. Though he had nearly forgotten the incident, he decided to take them up on their offer.

They met him at the train station in New York and then took him to the corner of Thirty-fourth Street and Fifth Avenue.

"That," said the elderly man, pointing to a mammoth new building made of reddish stone on the corner, "is a hotel I have just built for you to manage."

"You must be joking," the clerk said.

"I can assure you that I am not," said the old gentleman with a smile. The elderly man's name was William Waldorf Astor. The huge turreted building was the original Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. And the young clerk was George C. Boldt, the hotel's first manager.

The lesson for our Hornets? Be careful before judging others too quickly and remember to be kind to all. You just never know how much you might be really helping someone out.
